Article Abstract

New green and sustainable sources were chosen to obtain chitosan, an important material, with many applications in different fields. The present study is focused on egg capsules of waste as raw material for chitosan oligomers. As previous studies revealed that chitosan extraction from this material takes place with a low yield, the present research aimed to optimize this step. A 2 experimental plan, with three replicates in the center, was proposed to investigate the influence of NaOH concentration and temperature on the yield extraction. After a primary analysis of the experimental data, a favorable temperature value was selected (90 °C) at which the total dissolution of the egg capsules was obtained. Then, at this temperature, the experimental plan was extended exploring the influence of the NaOH concentration on three levels (5, 6, and 7%) and the extraction duration on two levels (60 and 85 min). Based on all experimental data, a neural model was obtained and validated. The neural model was used to maximize the yield, applying Genetic Algorithm (GA) implemented in Matlab. The resulting optimal solution is: NaOH concentration 6.47%, temperature 90 °C, duration 120 min, with a yield value of 7.05%.

New formulation of diflubenzuron, was carried out through a simple and green route using polyethylene glycol (PEG). The insecticidal efficacy of PEG nano-capsules loaded with diflubenzuron (DFB) pesticide was evaluated against Helicoverpa armigera (Heb). The loaded nanoparticles had the spherical-shape and an average size of 80 ± 20 nm.

During their development, phasmid eggs with their long developmental periods face numerous biotic and abiotic challenges. These insect eggs are unique for their thick egg capsule and a specialised escape structure called operculum. This operculum needs to be easy to open from the inside, yet must not be a "weak spot" for potential predators.

Metal and metalloid concentration, distribution and accumulation in embryonic tissues of the batoid Sympterygia acuta.

Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande - FURG, Av. Itália Km 8, Rio Grande, RS 96203-900, Brazil.

A few studies have assessed the environmental contamination in elasmobranch embryos, remarkably oviparous species. In this study, we evaluated the concentration of 10 metals and As in embryos of the critically endangered Bignose Fanskate Sympterygia acuta, and the distribution and accumulation pattern of these elements in embryonic tissues. Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn concentrations were determined in egg capsules, homogenized embryos, and yolk sac, through Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, and data was analyzed through univariate multiple comparisons, Principal Component Analysis and generalized linear models.

Objective: The reproductive success of Aedes aegypti, a primary vector of dengue and other arboviruses, depends on host blood nutrition. Variations in blood group composition may significantly influence mosquito fecundity, egg viability, and offspring fitness, potentially impacting disease transmission dynamics. This study investigates the effect of human blood groups on the egg hatching rate and offspring morphometric development of Aedes aegypti.

Background: Kuntai capsules, a traditional Chinese medicine, are speculated to improve the treatment outcomes of patients with ovarian reserve dysfunction (DOR), but existing evidence is limited.

Objective: To investigate the effects of Kuntai capsule pretreatment on the IVF/ICSI treatment outcomes of DOR patients with different ovarian stimulation regimens (PPOS, antagonists, and microstimulation).

Method: A retrospective cohort study design was used to include 7271 DOR patients who underwent IVF/ICSI between January 2015 and February 2025.
