Article Abstract

A well-documented side effect of cannabis and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) acute administration is deficits in cognition and attention. Cannabidiol (CBD), a nonintoxicating constituent of cannabis, may modulate THC's impairing effects. A goal of this study was to determine the effects of THC and CBD, alone and in combination, on performance in the rodent Psychomotor Vigilance Test (rPVT), a translational paradigm used to quantify sustained attention. Outcome measures in the rPVT include motor speed, premature responding, and lapses in attention. Sprague Dawley rats were trained to perform the rPVT to the acquisition criteria and then received oral doses (mg/kg) of THC (1-17.6), CBD (1-100), and combinations of THC + CBD in sesame oil prior to rPVT sessions, administered in a within-subject randomized design. Blood was collected from rats receiving selected doses of THC alone or THC + CBD for analysis of THC and its metabolites. THC alone produced significant decreases in accuracy and increases in lapses in attention at higher doses (10 mg/kg; s < .05). The coadministration of CBD (10 mg/kg) with THC (3 or 10 mg/kg) caused greater impairments to sustained attention compared with administration of THC alone (s < .05). The rPVT is a translational platform sensitive to detect impairments in attention associated with THC and other cannabis constituents. Further work is necessary to determine the mechanism of THC and CBD interactions on impairments in sustained attention. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).

Palytoxin-like compounds, including ovatoxins, are potent emerging toxins responsible for human respiratory poisonings following inhalation of contaminated marine aerosols. Periodic massive proliferations of the ovatoxin-producing organism (Ostreopsis cf. ovata) worldwide, particularly in the Mediterranean, have caused severe toxic outbreaks, drawing the attention of health authorities.

Efficient water-absorbing and water-holding materials have shown notable promise in various applications, including hygiene products, agriculture, and drug delivery systems. Opposed to traditional absorbents prepared using synthetic polymers, bio-based, environmentally friendly efficient absorbents have attracted more attention from both academia and the industry. Herein, the aerogel absorbents from functional sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa), citric acid (CA) crosslinker, and cellulose nanofibers (CNF) have been developed via freeze-drying and cross-linking process.

Methuosis caused by dysregulated macropinocytosis, a promising tumor therapeutic strategy.

Pharmacol Res

National Key Laboratory of Immunology & Inflammation, Institute of Immunology, Naval Medical University, Shanghai 200433, China. Electronic address:

Nonapoptotic programmed cell death (PCD) has been recognized as potential alternative target for increasing chemosensitivity and augmenting antitumor efficacy. Among various types of nonapoptotic PCD, methuosis has gotten increasing attention recently, largely due to its unique morphological features and potential implications for apoptosis-resistant tumor therapy with negligible side effects. Methuosis is characterized by cytoplasmic vacuolization initiated by sustained macropinocytosis, concomitantly, the other cytotoxic agents from extracellular fluid can be delivered into cytoplasm of tumor cell via macropinocytosis, which can profoundly strengthen the combined antitumor efficacy.

Aims: Low-carbohydrate diets (LCDs) have emerged as a potential dietary intervention for managing glycemic control, but their effectiveness across different cultural contexts remains unclear. To evaluate the efficacy of LCDs in managing type 2 diabetes, with attention to cultural context, and to clarify how variability in carbohydrate definitions affects interpretation.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Scopus from inception to 1 August 2024 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) ≥ 12 weeks in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Precision fermentation represents an innovative cell-based production approach that employs synthetic biology and metabolic engineering tools, revolutionizing global food production by utilizing "microbial cell factories" to produce added-value ingredients. However, its global implementation is hindered by technological and scalability bottlenecks, regulatory fragmentation, regional accessibility and consumer acceptance, and nutritional trade-offs challenges. This review utilizes illustrated case studies and modeling analysis to present a detailed exploration of precision fermentation intersecting with global cell-based food production, discussing actionable research gaps and insights as well as advanced bioengineering practices and analytical techniques, to address these challenges for ongoing academic research, industrial applications and policy initiatives, thus supporting the transition of fermentation-enabled food production toward efficient and sustainable manufacturing.
