Determination of crystal structures of nanocrystalline or amorphous compounds is a great challenge in solid-state chemistry and physics. Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of X-ray or neutron total scattering data has proven to be a key element in tackling this challenge. However, in most cases, a reliable structural motif is needed as a starting configuration for structure refinements. Here, an algorithm that is able to determine the crystal structure of an unknown compound by means of an on-the-fly trained machine learning model, which combines density functional theory calculations with comparison of calculated and measured PDFs for global optimization in an artificial landscape, is presented. Due to the nature of this landscape, even metastable configurations and stacking disorders can be identified.

The supported catalytically active liquid metal solution (SCALMS) concept is based on catalytically active metals dissolved in a low-melting-point liquid metal matrix. These solid alloy particles, deposited over a high area support, transform into a liquid alloy under reaction conditions. In this work, GaPt SCALMS materials of varying composition are investigated and focus on the change in the alloy composition during preheating, the actual high temperature propane dehydrogenation at 823 K, and after cool-down.

Light-driven formation of radical ion pairs that occurs much faster than their electron spin dynamics results in correlated spins whose coherence properties can be used as a quantum-based electric field sensor. This results from the radical ion pair having charge and spin distributions that track one another. Thus, electric field induced changes in the distance between the two charges are reflected in the spin-spin distance that can be measured directly using out-of-phase electron spin echo envelope modulation (OOP-ESEEM), a pulse-EPR technique.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by human-infective schistosomes (Trematoda: ). Intestinal schistosomiasis in sub-Saharan Africa and the Neotropics is caused primarily by and is transmitted by several planorbid snail species. Adult male and female parasites in the definitive mammalian host pair and reside in the mesenteric vasculature; females lay eggs that traverse the intestinal wall to be excreted, but a significant proportion become trapped in host tissues, especially the liver, eliciting granulomatous immune responses that underlie most disease pathology.

Driven by access to large volumes of movement data, the study of human mobility has grown rapidly over the past few decades. The field has shown that human mobility is scale-free, proposed models to generate scale-free moving distance distributions and explained how the scale-free distribution arises. It has not, however, explicitly addressed how mobility is structured by geographical constraints, such as how mobility relates to the outlines of landmasses, lakes and rivers and the placement of buildings, roadways and cities.
