Globally, most people now own a pet. Scales have been developed to understand the impact of pet ownership on people's lives and to measure specific aspects of the owner-pet relationship. The Cat-/Dog-Owner Relationship Scale (C/DORS) is a tool developed to investigate this relationship in both dog and cat owners. The aim of the study was to refine and validate the C/DORS for cat owners in Italian. Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were used to determine the most appropriate factor model. Construct validity was confirmed by correlating the C/DORS subscales with the Lexington Attachment to Pets (LAPS) subscales. Results confirmed the original structure of the English version (i.e., three factors: Pet Owner Interaction = POI, Perceived Emotional Closeness = PEC, Perceived Costs = PC) and CFA confirmed the structure of LAPS and C/DORS scales. Cronbach's alpha demonstrated the Italian version of the two scales to have good internal reliability for all domains. Owners of cats living exclusively indoors reported higher scores on POI and PEC compared to indoor/outdoor cats. Owning both cats and dogs was correlated with lower scores on POI, and fewer perceived costs (i.e., PC) of cat ownership. Finally, behaviour problems, not being neutered, and lack of previous experience with cat ownership were associated with lower scores on PC.

This study evaluates the program's outcomes and impact.
Methods: This evaluation covers the period from the program's implementation in July 2021 through December 2023, with a more detailed analysis focusing on 2022-2023.

The radiological accidents that occurred at the Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants resulted in the release of a substantial amount of radioactive material into the environment, requiring evacuation of residents. Evacuations caused involuntary abandonment of many pets, and both feral dogs and cats can still be found in exclusion zones of Chernobyl and Fukushima, likely offspring of pets left behind. Animal welfare groups have provided care for these forsaken animals, oftentimes rescuing them and subsequently facilitating their adoption, or in some cases reuniting them with their original owners.

However, cases without these hallmark symptoms are rare and often misdiagnosed. This case is noteworthy for its atypical presentation, where a cat developed systemic cryptococcosis without the typical respiratory or neurological involvement, making it particularly challenging to diagnose.

Case Summary: An 11-year-old male neutered domestic longhair cat was presented to an emergency referral hospital after sustaining severe injuries isolated to the thorax after a dog attack. Initial stabilisation included oxygen supplementation, intravenous fluid therapy, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), serial blood gas analyses, thoracic and abdominal radiographs, opioid analgesics and broad-spectrum antibiotics. CT revealed multiple internally displaced rib fractures that punctured through the mediastinum and were in intimate proximity to the cranial vena cava and proximal aortic arch.
