Article Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate pre-slaughter risk factors on the probability of bruising and the number of bruises in different regions of the bovine carcass. The study evaluated the data from 4061 batches of slaughtered cattle, totalling 199,026 carcasses, from Hereford and Aberdeen Angus animals in crosses with continental European breeds and Zebu cattle. The factors that caused injury were sex, handling conditions (score), vehicle type, vehicle load density (kg/m), travel time (minutes), travel distance (kilometres), physiological maturity (dentition), animal reactivity (score), and carcass fat (score). The type of vehicle had the greatest influence on the probability of carcass bruising and affected all carcass cuts. More bruising occurred in vehicles with a greater load capacity. A higher chance of bruising was seen in groups of older animals, those with an excitable temperament and, especially, in groups of females. Higher load densities during transport resulted in a greater chance of bruising occurring in all cuts except the hindquarters. Distance and travel time are unstable in the models, but also detrimental, increasing the probability of bruising and the number of bruises in the various cuts. The results of this study suggest that good practices in the welfare, handling and transport of the animals, as well as training the personnel responsible for their handling, should be adopted to minimise the risk of injury at different locations on the carcass.

Objectives: Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is a complication of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) that carries a risk of secondary brain injury. This study investigated the association between ICP burden and brain injury patterns on MRI in children with severe TBI.

Design, Setting, And Patients: Secondary analysis of the Approaches and Decisions in Acute Pediatric TBI (ADAPT) study, which included children with severe TBI (Glasgow Coma Scale score < 9) who received a clinical MRI within 30 days of injury.

Drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia (DITP) is a rare but life-threatening condition characterized by a sudden and serious drop in the number of platelets from drug-dependent antibodies against platelet glycoproteins. We report the case of a 57-year-old man who developed severe thrombocytopenia and mucocutaneous bleeding following a short course of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) for presumed tick-borne disease. The patient experienced bleeding gums, pinpoint rashes, bruising, and extreme fatigue.

Introduction/objectives: Bouldering, a dynamic climbing discipline performed without ropes, is associated with high-energy ground falls. While most existing climbing injury literature has focused on the upper extremities, our data indicated an increasing number of complex knee injuries related to bouldering. This review was conducted to characterize the injury patterns sustained from bouldering ground falls, and to compare the relative burden of these injuries with those sustained in other high-participation sports.

Background: This study aimed to explore the effect of radial artery flow hyperperfusion on the successful collection of radial artery blood gas specimens in patients with acute heart failure.

Methods: From February 2023 to December 2024, 548 patients with acute heart failure in the database of the emergency rescue room of our hospital were divided into two groups: non-hyperperfusion group and hyperperfusion group. In the hyperperfusion group, arterial blood gas was collected using the radial artery hyperinfusion method (improving radial artery perfusion by blocking arteries other than the radial artery in the forearm using a customized sphygmomanometer with a double-airbag hollow cuff).

Liposuction is the most common surgical procedure performed globally. It is generally associated with low rates of major complications. Cosmetic surgery tourism has seen a steep incline in popularity and is often favorable to patients because of lower costs.
