Article Abstract

The inclusion of secondary and tertiary benzanilide-based mesogenic groups into liquid crystal dimers is reported as a means to develop new materials. Furthermore, substitution at the nitrogen atom is shown to introduce an additional synthetic 'handle' to modify the molecular structure of the tertiary materials. The design of these materials has proved challenging due to the strong preferences of 3° benzanilides for the E amide conformation. In this work, lateral substitution is used to modify the conformational preferences of the amide linkage and promote liquid crystallinity for a series of N-methyl benzanilide dimers. As the proportion of the E conformer decreases, the nematic-isotropic transition temperatures increase, and enantiotropic nematic behaviour is observed. We also report the synthesis and characterisation of the analogous 2° benzanilide-based materials, which show nematic and twist-bend nematic behaviour. This approach highlights the effects that seemingly small structural modifications, such as the inclusion and position of a methyl group, can have on molecular shape and hence, liquid crystalline behaviour.

Purpose: This long-term retrospective case series study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and to identify risk factors for peri-implantitis associated with the one-step lateral sinus floor elevation (LSFE) procedure in patients with a severely atrophic posterior maxilla.

Materials And Methods: Clinical data were obtained from Periodontic Department at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital. One-step, non-submerged LSFE enabled simultaneous implant placement in sites with residual bone height < 5 mm.

To compare the long-term outcomes of cervicovaginal reconstruction between using small intestinal submucosa (SIS) grafts and using autologous lateral femoral split-thickness skin substitutes (STS) grafts. This was a prospective cohort study, involving 81 patients with obstructive cervical dysplasia who underwent cervicovaginal reconstruction using either SIS or STS grafts from January 2012 to August 2024. Data were collected, including demographic characteristics, operative duration, hospitalization costs, postoperative menstrual recovery, pregnancy outcomes, reoperation rates, vaginal length, and other relevant clinical parameters.

Bicruciate-substituting total knee arthroplasty (BCS-TKA) mimicking normal knee anatomy contributes to the physiological knee kinematics of the tibiofemoral joint; however, potential disadvantages have been predicted regarding the patellofemoral joint environment. This study aimed to compare the postoperative patellar tracking of BCS-TKA with that of posterior stabilized (PS)-TKA and explore the surgical factors necessary for achieving good postoperative patellar tracking. The patellar tilt angle (PTA) of the resurfaced patella 1 month and 1 year after surgery was retrospectively compared in 160 knees (80 BCS-TKA and 80 PS-TKA).

The surgical technique of L2- L5 Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion (OLIF), including the exposure of the surgical corridor, preparation of the disc space, and placement of the interbody cages, followed by pedicle screw fixation, is presented. To perform this technique, the patient is positioned in right lateral decubitus on a radiolucent table, and an oblique incision is made 3-5 cm anterior to the middle of the L3-L4 disc space. After dissecting the subcutaneous fat, the external oblique aponeurosis is cut along the line of the incision and the oblique muscles (external and internal), and the transversus abdominis muscles are split along the direction of the muscle fibers.
