Background: Water contamination is a global challenge, primarily due to heavy metal ions like lead (Pb), iron (Fe), cadmium (Cd), andmercury (Hg) as well as dyes. These pollutants enter the ecosystem from industrial waste and runoff, accumulate in the environment and pose a high risk to humans, animals and plants. Various sensors, such as colorimetric sensors, and electrochemical sensors have been developed to detect these ions and dyes.

Two forms of nanocellulose-based sensing materials were developed for heavy metal ions (HMIs) detection: all-solid-state and suspension. In these materials, cellulose nanofibers (CNF), isolated from cellulose bleached pulp via homogenization, were employed as a support matrix. For all-solid-state optodes development free-base 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and zinc-porphyrin derivative (ZnPC) were deposited on CNF support.

Aluminum nanoparticles (Al NPs) were synthesized via catalyzed thermal reduction of an aluminum precursor in the presence of a capping ligand. A systematic study was conducted to examine the effect of dilution on nanoparticle synthesis by varying the volume of anhydrous toluene across four dilution factors while maintaining constant molar quantities of the aluminum precursor, catalyst, and ligand. This methodology is relevant for scale-up processes, where more dilute conditions can mitigate nanoparticle reactivity and enhance safety.

Background: Tackling climate change, together with improving indoor air quality, offers a significant opportunity to improve residents' health and well-being. This requires the evidence base to inform an energy-efficient retrofit design.
Objectives: (i) To develop a protocol that could be implemented by local authorities across a range of housing typologies and (ii) to deploy this protocol to establish baseline conditions in = 30 homes ahead of energy-efficient retrofitting.
