Voluntary movement requires communication from cortex to the spinal cord, where a dedicated pool of motor units (MUs) activates each muscle. The canonical description of MU function rests upon two foundational tenets. First, cortex cannot control MUs independently but supplies each pool with a common drive. Second, MUs are recruited in a rigid fashion that largely accords with Henneman's size principle. Although this paradigm has considerable empirical support, a direct test requires simultaneous observations of many MUs across diverse force profiles. In this study, we developed an isometric task that allowed stable MU recordings, in a rhesus macaque, even during rapidly changing forces. Patterns of MU activity were surprisingly behavior-dependent and could be accurately described only by assuming multiple drives. Consistent with flexible descending control, microstimulation of neighboring cortical sites recruited different MUs. Furthermore, the cortical population response displayed sufficient degrees of freedom to potentially exert fine-grained control. Thus, MU activity is flexibly controlled to meet task demands, and cortex may contribute to this ability.

Importance: Exposure to inflammation from chorioamnionitis places the fetus at higher risk of premature birth and may increase the risk of neurodevelopmental impairments, though the evidence for the latter is mixed.
Objective: To evaluate whether moderate to severe histologic chorioamnionitis (HCA) is directly associated with adverse motor performance, independent of the indirect mediating effects of premature birth.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This prospective, population-based cohort study recruited participants between September 16, 2016, and November 19, 2019, from referral and nonreferral neonatal intensive care units of 5 southwestern Ohio hospitals.
A 52-year-old Myanmar man presented with bilateral progressive painless asymmetrical wrist and finger drop in 1 year without any sensory and sphincter problems. He has hypochromic microcytic anemia diagnosed as Hemoglobin E disease before. However, a serial full blood count revealed thrombocytopenia and a drop in hemoglobin disproportionate to HbE disease.

Evidence on regional muscle excitation within hamstrings remains controversial, primarily because information derived solely from surface electromyograms (sEMG) amplitude does not necessarily provide an accurate estimate of neural drive to the muscle. Spinal cord injury (SCI) is exacerbated by the formation of an acidic microenvironment and extensive neuronal loss, both of which contribute to poor functional recovery. To address this, we developed lysine-polydopamine nanoparticles (Lys-PDA) as a multifunctional therapeutic platform for SCI. Lysine, a naturally occurring amino acid, possesses weak alkalinity and neuroprotective properties, but suffers from poor in vivo stability and non-specific distribution.
