Article Abstract

Connectivity underpins the persistence of life; it needs to inform biodiversity conservation decisions. Yet, when prioritising conservation areas and developing actions, connectivity is not being operationalised in spatial planning. The challenge is the translation of flows associated with connectivity into conservation objectives that lead to actions. Connectivity is nebulous, it can be abstract and mean different things to different people, making it difficult to include in conservation problems. Here, we show how connectivity can be included in mathematically defining conservation planning objectives. We provide a path forward for linking connectivity to high-level conservation goals, such as increasing species' persistence. We propose ways to design spatial management areas that gain biodiversity benefit from connectivity.

Distribution and Relative Size of Protein Binding Domains Cooperatively Influence Phase Separation of Protein-RNA Mixtures.

Multivalent protein-protein interactions play essential roles in mediating liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) that drives biomolecular condensate formation. Here, we systematically investigate how the spatial distribution and relative size of protein binding domains (PBDs) would influence LLPS in a mixture of spherical proteins and RNA single strands by using a patchy-particle polymer model, wherein each protein contains a fixed number of PBDs on the surface distributed closely or sparsely. Intriguingly, we find that LLPS behavior exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the cooperative interplay between PBD distribution and protein size: while sparsely distributed PBDs are more favorable to LLPS for small proteins, closely packed PBDs facilitate LLPS for larger counterparts.

Purpose Of Review: Symptom relief is now recognized as the primary remit of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with stable coronary artery disease. The relationship between the nature of angina symptoms and the likelihood of successful symptom relief from PCI had not been systematically studied until recently.

Recent Findings: The ORBITA-2 symptom-stratified analysis found that while the severity and nature of symptoms were poorly associated with the severity of coronary disease, the nature of the symptoms powerfully predicted the efficacy of PCI in relieving angina.
