Article Abstract

Cetacean poxviruses (CePVs) cause 'tattoo' skin lesions in small and large cetaceans worldwide. Although the disease has been known for decades, genomic data for these poxviruses are very limited, with the exception of CePV- which was completely sequenced in 2020. Using a newly developed pan-pox real-time PCR system targeting a conserved nucleotide sequence located within the Monkeypox virus D6R gene, we rapidly detected the CePV genome in typical skin lesions collected from two Peruvian common bottlenose dolphins () by-caught off Peru in 1993. Phylogenetic analyses based on the sequencing of the DNA polymerase and DNA topoisomerase genes showed that the two viruses are very closely related to each other, although the dolphins they infected pertained to different ecotypes. The poxviruses described in this study belong to CePV-1, a heterogeneous clade that infects many species of dolphins (Delphinidae) and porpoises (Phocoenidae). Among this clade, the CePVs from Peru were more related to the viruses infecting Delphinidae than to those detected in Phocoenidae. This is the first time that CePVs were identified in free-ranging odontocetes from the Eastern Pacific, surprisingly in 30-year-old samples. These data further suggest a close and long-standing pathogen-host co-evolution, resulting in different lineages of CePVs.

Background: The buccinator musculomucosal flap was found to be a useful alternative for palatal fistula and velopharyngeal insufficiency repair. This surgical technique has become increasingly common in the surgical management of secondary cleft palate deformities during the last years; however, few studies have been published documenting associated postoperative complications. The present study was carried out to present a case series and describe observed surgical complications associated with this technique used by the authors.

Background: Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic subcutaneous mycosis caused by dematiaceous fungi that mainly affects rural workers in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease poses a treatment challenge due to its refractory nature and high relapse rate. To date, few cases have been reported in Peru.

Dengue, a major mosquito-borne viral disease, represents a public health threat in tropical regions. Its impact on pregnancy remains unclear, with limited data on maternal and perinatal outcomes. To describe the clinical, demographic, laboratory, and management characteristics of dengue during pregnancy, we conducted a retrospective review of medical records.

We determined secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA) against type-III secretion system proteins (ExoS, ExoT, PopB and PopB) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in colostrum of 150 Peruvian women using Western blot. We found 142 (94.7%) samples with at least one sIgA.

Gut colonization with extended-spectrum beta lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) is increasingly common among children in low and middle-income countries. Some children nevertheless remain never or rarely colonized during early life. Understanding how this protection is conferred could be helpful for designing future interventions to protect children's health.
