Article Abstract

In this work we designed a one-pot solvothermal synthesis of MoSSe nanosheets directly grown on N-doped reduced graphene oxide (hereafter N-rGO). We optimized the synthesis conditions to control the Se : S ratio, with the aim of tailoring the optoelectronic properties of the resulting nanocomposites for their use as electro- and photoelectro-catalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The synthesis protocol made use of ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATM) as MoS precursor and dimethyl diselenide (DMDSe) as selenizing agent. By optimizing growth conditions and post-annealing treatments, we produced either partially amorphous or highly crystalline chalcogen-defective electrocatalysts. All samples were tested for the HER in acidic environment, and the best performing among them, for the photoassisted HER. In low crystallinity samples, the introduction of Se is not beneficial for promoting the catalytic activity, and MoS/N-rGO was the most active electrocatalyst. On the other hand, after the post-annealing treatment and the consequent crystallization of the materials, the best HER performance was obtained for the sample with = 0.38, which also showed the highest enhancement upon light irradiation.

The transition of plants from water to land included the evolution from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) growth. In their work, Laura Moody and colleagues identify a new factor that encodes aFLOE-related protein, which is essential for the 2D-to-3D growth transition in the moss Physcomitrium patens. To find out more about their work, we spoke to the first author, Zoe Weeks, and the corresponding author, Laura Moody, Associate Professor in Molecular Plant Biology at the University of Oxford, UK.

The structural asymmetry of Janus transition metal dichalcogenides gives rise to physical properties distinct from those of their symmetric counterparts. When Janus transition metal dichalcogenides are vertically stacked, their resulting heterostructure exhibits novel and enhanced electronic properties due to interactions between interfacial atoms, changes in electric dipole moments, and van der Waals interlayer interactions. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations based on density functional theory using the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package to investigate the electronic properties of MoSSe-WSSe vertical Janus transition metal dichalcogenides heterostructures.

The Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) gene is a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) with expression restricted to the developing nervous system. Most neuroblastomas express native ALK protein on the cell surface and ALK is uniformly overexpressed in fusion-positive rhabdomyosarcoma and in subsets of metastatic colorectal carcinoma, melanoma, ovarian carcinoma, and breast carcinoma. Here, we first confirm that ALK RNA, protein, and tumor cell surface expression is elevated in multiple pediatric and adult malignancies with minimal expression in childhood normal tissues.

The model moss Physcomitrium patens relies heavily on homologous recombination to repair DNA double-strand breaks.

We previously showed that moss (Physcomitrium patens) cells are highly radioresistant and suggested that P. patens uses an efficient mechanism to repair DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Homologous recombination (HR), canonical non-homologous end-joining, and alternative end-joining are the major pathways used to repair DSBs.

In conditions of excess illumination, alternative electron transport pathways in the thylakoid membranes protect the photosynthetic apparatus against damage from eventual over-reduction. Two main pathways downstream of photosystem I (PSI) enable alternative electron flow, mitigating PSI acceptor-side limitation, while contributing to ATP biosynthesis without reducing NADP to NADPH: cyclic electron transport (CET) and pseudo-cyclic electron transport (PCET). Flavodiiron proteins (FLV) are crucial enzymes in PCET, found in all photosynthetic organisms but lost during the evolution of angiosperms.
