β-Glucan is a component of barley grains with functional properties that make it useful for human consumption. Cultivars with high grain β-glucan are required for industrial processing. Breeding for barley genotypes with higher β-glucan content requires a high-throughput method to assess β-glucan quickly and cheaply. Wet-chemistry laboratory procedures are low-throughput and expensive, but indirect measurement methods such as near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) match the breeding requirements (once the NIR spectrometer is available). A predictive model for the indirect measurement of β-glucan content in ground barley grains with NIRS was therefore developed using 248 samples with a wide range of β-glucan contents (3.4%-17.6%). To develop such calibration, 198 unique samples were used for training and 50 for validation. The predictive model had R = 0.990, bias = 0.013% and RMSEP = 0.327% for validation. NIRS was confirmed to be a very useful technique for indirect measurement of β-glucan content and evaluation of high-β-glucan barleys.

A growing body of research suggests that males can have internalized sexualities such as autogynephilia (sexual attraction to the thought or image of oneself as female) which lead to the development of trans identity. Here I present evidence that females can have analogous internalized sexualities such as autoandrophilia (sexual attraction to the thought or image of oneself as male) which similarly lead to the development of trans identity. The case for female autoandrophilia presented here uses both direct and indirect lines of evidence.

Purpose: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a chronic cerebrovascular disorder characterized by progressive arterial stenosis and fragile collateral formation, elevating stroke risk. Revascularization is the standard treatment, yet up to 27% of patients experience ischemic events within a year due to bypass insufficiency. While digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the gold standard for assessing bypass function, it is invasive and time-consuming.

The emergence of the Novel COVID-19 Pandemic has undoubtedly impacted the lives of individuals across the globe. It has drawn the attention of major public health agencies as they work intensely towards understanding the behavior of the virus causing the disease, while simultaneously establishing ways to curb the spread of the virus among populations. As of the time of writing, 7,949,973 confirmed cases have been reported globally; with the United States (US) contributing to 26.

Background: Research has revealed that presence of meaning in life may be a protective factor for life satisfaction among young adults in China. However, few studies have examined the underlying mechanisms that may mediate or moderate this association. This study aimed to test the mechanisms underlying the relationship between meaning in life and life satisfaction among young adults in China.
