Keeping Water Safe in Changing Times: What Nurses Need to Know.

Nephrol Nurs J

September 2025

Managing Partner of Jim Curtis and Associates, LLC.

As hemodiafiltration (HDF) is introduced in the United States and becomes more common, it is even more important for every person who has any responsibility for hemodialysis (HD) or HDF to know and understand the critical importance of safe dialysis water and dialysate. Drawing from foundational theories in systems thinking, MLH applies a systemness mindset to improve care quality, operational efficiency, and patient experience across its six hospitals and dozens of physician practices and outpatient services. MLH's strategic initiatives have included chartering a Systems Operational Improvement Team (SOIT) to achieve $73 million in savings in its first year, and the Methodist Associate Advancement Program (MAAP) to support workforce development.

Background: In cancer, lack of social support is associated with reduced survival. Peer support interventions have reduced social isolation among Black women with cancer but have yet to be adapted for Black people diagnosed with endometrial cancer - a growing, high-need demographic that has been historically excluded from community-engaged research. Our research team at the University of Washington addressed this gap by working within an established community partnership to develop a pragmatic randomized controlled trial to adapt and test social support interventions among Black women with EC - the Social Interventions for Support during Treatment of Endometrial Cancer and Recurrence (SISTER) Study.
