Over the past twenty years, the number of university-based energy institutes (UBEI) that focus on supporting energy-related research has increased substantially. A recent set of surveys, the results of which we share here, show that there are over 150 active energy institutes at Ph.D.-granting universities in the United States, many of which have a significant level of internal or external financial support (and there are likely many more at 4-year colleges and other institutions of higher learning). While most of these institutes have formal or informal collaborative interactions with other institutes, there is no existing nation-wide network or organization that all institutes can interact with. As such, we have endeavored to investigate and classify the current landscape of UBEIs, with the intent of enabling the formation of a centralized organization to further support the evolution of the academic energy research movement in the U.S. After an initial review, we convened a summit-style retreat in the fall of 2019 in Pittsburgh PA that was attended by over 100 individuals representing 67 UBEIs. Multiple surveys and elicitations were conducted before, during, and after this meeting, and we present here an overview of our findings, and a summary of our proposed path forward.

Innovative technology allows for personalization of stimulation frequency in dual-site deep brain stimulation (DBS), offering promise for challenging symptoms in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly freezing of gait (FoG). Early results suggest that combining standard subthalamic nucleus (STN) stimulation with substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) stimulation may improve FoG outcomes. However, patient response and the optimal SNr stimulation frequency vary.

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate surgeons' ergonomic satisfaction when using laparoscopic energy devices and to investigate how prolonged use affects muscle fatigue and surgical performance.
Methods: A two-part study, including a survey and a kinesiologic experiment, was conducted to compare 4 laparoscopic energy devices (D1-D4). Thirty surgeons completed a structured survey assessing ergonomic factors such as device weight, grip strength, handle design, comfort, and trigger location.

Beyond their classical functions as redox cofactors, recent fundamental and clinical research has expanded our understanding of the diverse roles of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP) in signaling pathways, epigenetic regulation and energy homeostasis. Moreover, NAD and NADP influence numerous diseases as well as the processes of aging, and are emerging as targets for clinical intervention. Here, we summarize safety, bioavailability and efficacy data from NAD-related clinical trials, focusing on aging and neurodegenerative diseases.

A variety of stressors, including environmental insults, pathological conditions, and transition states, constantly challenge cells that, in turn, activate adaptive responses to maintain homeostasis. Mitochondria have pivotal roles in orchestrating these responses that influence not only cellular energy production but also broader physiological processes. This rapid systematic review aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy (concurrent validity, predictive ability, reliability) of indirect calorimetry (IC) for measuring resting energy expenditure (REE) in adults with overweight or obesity. PubMed and Web of Science searched for studies measuring REE by IC in adults with overweight or obesity and reported primary outcomes: concurrent validity, predictive ability, or reliability. N = 22 studies were included that evaluated n = 10 IC devices.
