Article Abstract

Purpose: In clinically node-positive breast cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST), nodal metastases can be initially marked and then removed during surgical axillary staging. Marking methods vary significantly in terms of feasibility and cost. The purpose of the extended TATTOO trial was to report on the false-negative rate (FNR) of the low-cost method carbon tattooing.

Methods: The international prospective single-arm TATTOO trial included clinically node-positive breast cancer patients planned for NST from November 2017 to January 2021. For the present analysis, patients who received both the targeted procedure with or without an additional sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy and a completion axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) were selected. Primary endpoint was the FNR.

Results: Out of 172 included patients, 149 had undergone a completion ALND. The detection rate for the tattooed node was 94.6% (141 out of 149). SLN biopsy was attempted in 132 out of 149 patients with a detection rate of 91.7% (121 out of 132). SLN and tattooed node were identical in 58 out of 121 individuals (47.9%). The combined procedure, i.e. targeted axillary dissection (TAD) was successful in 147 of 149 cases (98.7%). Four out of 65 patients with a clinically node-negative status after NST had a negative TAD but metastases on ALND, corresponding to a FNR of 6.2%. All false-negative TAD procedures were performed in the first 2 years of the trial (2018-2019, p = 0.022).

Conclusion: Carbon tattooing is a feasible marking method for TAD with a high detection rate and an acceptably low FNR. The TATTOO trial was preregistered as prospective trial before initiation at the University of Rostock, Germany (DRKS00013169).

Background: Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but potentially fatal condition caused by toxin-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus. While typically associated with menstruation or postoperative complications, non-menstrual forms related to skin trauma, including tattooing, are increasingly recognized.

Case Presentation: We report the sudden death of a woman in her early thirties who had experienced dizziness and circulatory instability in the days preceding death.

Exploring a novel method for inoculation to experimentally induce digital dermatitis in dairy calves.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is a polymicrobial, multifactorial hoof disorder with an undefined etiology, and existing animal models fail to induce a fast, standardized infection in bovine skin. This study explored bacterial inoculation methods for bacterial skin penetration to optimize a DD infection model. A pilot study tested various microneedles in calf feet, identifying tattoo needles as the most effective for skin penetration based on the ink depth and amount.

Background: Preoperative localization of colorectal cancer (CRC) is essential for accurate resection and treatment planning. However, colonoscopy-based tumor localization may lack optimal accuracy, potentially affecting surgical outcomes and patient management. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of colonoscopic localization of CRC and identify predictors of preoperative endoscopic localization errors.

Background: Microinfusion is a superficial microneedling procedure that infuses medications into the surface of the dermis through disposable needles attached to tattoo equipment. Various medications can be microinfused; minoxidil is frequently utilized as an adjuvant treatment for androgenetic alopecia, but little data is available on its systemic effects when administered via this technique.

Objective: To compare blood pressure readings before and after microinfusion of minoxidil in the scalp to assess this drug's systemic effects when applied using this technique.

Background: Transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs), such as HIV, HBV, HCV, and Syphilis, present considerable difficulties in maintaining blood quality despite the critical role of blood transfusion in emergency medical care. This study aims to ascertain the prevalence of these infections and the factors that increase their risk among those who donate blood.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Federal Medical Center in Azare, involving 400 blood donors.
