In 2020-2021, a qualitative study was undertaken using an interpretive description methodology to identify what triggers grief in the first 2 years following the death of a beloved family member, and to gain other helpful insights about grief triggers from bereaved Canadian adult volunteers. In that study, a purposive sampling method was used to select 10 bereaved Canadian adult volunteers for in-depth, semi-structured interviews. This paper reports on the humor findings, as revealed to be a particularly complex grief trigger for many participants, as well as a periodic way for most to manage or live with their grief. Participant quotes and an extended discussion are included to illustrate the importance of these humor findings in relation to grief, and to inform bereaved people, bereavement service providers, and the general public about both helpful aspects and some cautionary considerations about humor.

Objective: Interpersonal loss, whether through bereavement or separation, can trigger profound emotional distress. While grief is a natural and universal process, some individuals develop maladaptive responses, increasing their vulnerability to posttraumatic symptoms. The present research aimed to explore the association between risk factors for posttraumatic symptoms among individuals who have experienced loss, specifically investigating the role of anxious attachment and defense mechanisms.

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a new diagnostic category included in global diagnostic classification systems for mental disorders. Background: The DSM-5 recognized that the separation anxiety disorder (SEPAD) may span the entire life course or have an adult-onset. Epidemiological data indicated a 23%-69% prevalence of SEPAD in clinical settings and a high comorbidity with both prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some authors hypothesize that while life threat represents the key trigger of PTSD, disruptions or threats to interpersonal bonds lead to PGD and SEPAD.

Bereavement is one of the major stressors for college students and triggers grief. Based on the integrative risk factor framework for the prediction of bereavement outcome, this study used a three-wave longitudinal design with 3-month intervals to explore the relationships between unfinished business and grief among bereaved college students and the role of continuing bonds (CBs), including internalized continuing bonds (ICBs) and externalized continuing bonds (ECBs). Bereaved college students who lost a loved one within the past 3 years participated in the longitudinal study (T1-T3), completing the Basic Information Questionnaire, Unfinished Business in Bereavement Scale, Continuing Bonds Scale, and Prolonged Grief Disorder-Revised Scale.
