Article Abstract

The indigenous fruit is usually processed to flour, called , being highly consumed during staple food shortage. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional composition of and its nutrient adequacy. Flours from four districts of Mozambique were analyzed using AOAC methods for proximate composition, HPLC for sugar, amino acids (AA), vitamin E and carotenoids and ICP-MS and FAAS for minerals. The results showed that stands out for its high content of fat (26.3-27.8%), mainly oleic acid, fiber (>6%), vitamin E (6.7 to 8.0 mg/100 g) and carotenes (2.2 to 2.6 mg/100 g). The main amino acids of protein were Arg, Asp and Glu, and Lys was the limiting one. The mineral composition reveals K (~1200 to 1700 mg/100 g) as the main macromineral followed by Mg > Ca > Na. The main trace element was Mn (~4 mg/100 g) followed by Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Co. Aluminum (~3 mg/100 g) was the main non-essential element and Rb, Ni, Sr, Ba, V, Cd were also quantified. Assuming the daily consumption of 50 g, provides 82% of Vitamin A dietary reference value for toddlers, while the consumption of 100 g contributes to 132% and 60% of Mn and vitamin A DRV for adults, respectively. Despite the nutritional advantages of , this flour can be a source of Ni, highlighting the importance of the study of good practices in its preparation to decrease the exposure to non-essential elements.

Triterpenic acids (TA) are widely distributed secondary metabolites/specialized metabolites in plants. Here a sensitive and comprehensive method for the characterization and quantitative analysis of 20 TA derivatives by means of GC-MS has been developed. The TA were efficiently derivatized using TMSCHN and BSTFA before analysis.

Grape pomace (GP), the main by-product of the wine industry, represents a valuable source of bioactive metabolites with significant potential for valorization in the context of sustainable bioresource management. This study systematically characterizes the fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profile, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activities (DPPH, ABTS, ORAC) of GP derived from seven grape varieties across three consecutive vintages (2022-2024). White GP, particularly Verdelho and Sercial, exhibited a superior lipid quality with high concentrations of methyl linoleate (up to 1997 mg/100 g DW) and methyl oleate (up to 1294 mg/100 g DW), low atherogenic (AI < 0.

Objective: To investigate the main nutrient components of commercially available teas in Guizhou Province and to evaluate their nutritional value.

Methods: A total of 17 kinds of tea samples(12 kinds of unfermented tea and 5 kinds of fermented tea) with local characteristics were collected in 4 different regions of Guizhou Province, and the samples were divided into 3 batches according to different varieties. According to national standards, direct drying method, Kjeldahl method, Soxhlet extraction method, high performance liquid chromatography, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and other detection method were used for the determination of general nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and ash and other indexes, and the content of the detection indexes was analyzed and made into a comprehensive evaluation of the method of the affiliation function.

Predicting dyscalcemia status in early-lactation multiparous Holstein cows using milk weight and constituent analysis from a single milking at 4 days in milk.

Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853. Electronic address:

Many multiparous cows struggle to adapt to the challenges of the early postpartum period. Dyscalcemia, a condition defined by low blood calcium concentrations at 4 DIM and associated with suboptimal performance across a spectrum of epidemiologically important outcomes (health, productivity, and reproductive success), can be a useful indicator that maladaptive phenotypes are developing in early postpartum dairy cows. Identifying dyscalcemic cows, though theoretically useful from a management perspective, is not logistically viable for commercial dairy farms due to the costs and labor that would be involved in the collection and analysis of samples.
