Article Abstract

The purpose of this article is to identify gold standards of care for return to sport following athletic injury, investigate overlooked aspects of return to sport rehabilitation, and provide expert opinion regarding current practices. The article was written by performing a literature review, then providing editorial expert opinion regarding current standards of return to sport. We concluded, through literature review and expert consensus, that a three-pronged approach to return to sport is recommended for therapists. These three prongs are ROM, strength, and hop testing. Cardiovascular readiness and psychological readiness for return to sport must also be assessed."

Purpose: To compare the outcomes of isolated anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) versus ACLR + lateral extra-articular procedures (LEAPs) at mid-term follow-up in a low activity population based on the Tegner activity scale (TAS ≤ 4).

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis comparing patients with a pre-injury TAS ≤ 4 who underwent primary isolated ACLR versus ACLR + LEAPs between 2012 and 2022. Propensity score matching based on age, sex, and presence of meniscal injury was used to establish two groups: ACLR alone and ACLR with LEAP.

We present the case of a physically active 50-year-old patient who underwent an arthroscopic release of the iliopsoas tendon due to a snapping hip. Postoperatively, active hip flexion was severely weakened. As a consequence patient had no stable gait pattern and was unable to continue her sports and physical activities.

We wish to comment on the recent case report by Quintana-Cepedal et al. which highlights successful conservative management of a complete adductor longus rupture in a football player. In our retrospective cohort of 111 athletes with MRI-confirmed adductor lesions, we similarly observed high return-to-sport rates following structured exercise therapy, comparable to injection-based interventions.

Purpose: The global rise in popularity of basketball has prompted an increased emphasis on understanding the injury patterns affecting players. This study analysed injury epidemiology and return to sport outcomes in Division I male and female collegiate basketball players. The authors hypothesise that ankle injuries are amongst the most common in this population and that there are similarly comparable injury rates between genders.
