Article Abstract

Project expert evaluation is the backbone of public funding allocation. A slight change in score can push a proposal below or above a funding line. Academic researchers have discovered many factors that may affect evaluation decision quality, yet the subject of cognitive proximity towards decision quality has not been considered thoroughly. Using 923 observations of the 2017 Beijing Innofund data, the study finds that cognitive proximity has an inverted "U-shape" relation to decision-making quality. Moreover, two contextual factors, evaluation experience and evaluation efforts, exert moderation effects on the inverted U shape. These findings fill the gaps in the current research on cognition-based perspective by specifying the mechanism of cognitive proximity in the evaluation field and contributing to improving decision-making quality by selecting appropriate evaluators. Theoretical contributions and policy implications have been discussed.

Megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts (MLC) is a rare leukodystrophy characterized by early-onset macrocephaly, white matter edema, seizures, and motor and cognitive decline. Missense mutations to hepatic and glial cell adhesion molecule (hepaCAM), also known as GlialCAM, are responsible for approximately twenty-five percent of MLC cases. HepaCAM is highly enriched in astrocytes and plays important roles in astrocyte territory establishment, gap junction coupling, branching organization, synaptic function, and development of the gliovascular unit.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most prevalent form of dementia, is characterized by hallmark pathologies such as amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaque accumulation, tau hyperphosphorylation, and progressive neuronal dysfunction. While much attention has focused on neurons and microglia, recent studies underscore the significant yet understudied roles of oligodendrocytes (OL) and oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPC) in AD pathology. OL, responsible for myelin production and maintenance, are impaired early in AD, contributing to demyelination, synaptic dysfunction, and cognitive decline.

Background: The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) has been central to identifying social isolation as a key determinant of health among older adults. However, prior HRS social isolation measures have relied on a subset of participants responding to a leave-behind questionnaire (LBQ), which limits longitudinal analyses, sample size, and inclusion of individuals with cognitive impairment who require a proxy. This study developed a brief social isolation scale that can be used in the full HRS cohort.
