SARS-CoV-2 antibody and neutralization dynamics among persons with natural- and vaccine-induced exposures.

PLoS One

September 2025

Agencia Costarricense de Investigaciones Biomédicas-Fundación INCIENSA (ACIB-FUNIN), San José, Costa Rica.

Previous SARS-CoV-2 research indicates that antibody levels and corresponding neutralization potential increase with additional exposures (comprising vaccination or infection), and that hybrid immunity resulting from combined vaccination and natural infection is more robust than either alone. However, it is unclear whether or how antibody levels increase or eventually plateau with repeated exposures and how SARS-CoV-2 exposure differs by sex or other demographic factors. Research regarding the association of antibody production with neutralization potential is also limited.

Background: Cholera is endemic in Uganda with periodic outbreaks occurring annually. On July 24, 2023, Uganda's Ministry of Health confirmed a cholera outbreak in Sigulu Island, Namayingo District. We investigated to determine its magnitude, identify possible exposures, and recommend evidence-based control interventions.

Repeated introductions and widespread transmission of human metapneumovirus in Côte d'Ivoire.

BMC Infect Dis

September 2025

Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies, Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, 20892, USA.

In Cote d'Ivoire, the incidence rate of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) rose from 165 cases per 1000 children in 2014 to more than 200 cases per 1000 children in 2015. The genetic diversity, transmission dynamics, and epidemiology of human metapneumovirus (hMPV), a causative agent of ARIs, in Cote d'Ivoire are unknown. This information is key in comprehending the transmission patterns and the role of global strains in establishing local epidemics in the country.

Adjuvants are widely used to boost the immune response during vaccination protocols. Our group has previously reported that repeated intraperitoneal administration of alum in mice, known as adjuvant conditioning (AC), creates an immunosuppressive environment that delays allogeneic graft rejection through NLRP3-dependent MDSC expansion. However, little is known about the effects of AC on the reprogramming of peritoneal cavity cells, particularly the different peritoneal macrophage populations, and the impact on the adaptive immune response.

Retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor α regulates bystander activation of memory CD8 T cells.

Front Immunol

September 2025

Division of Vaccinology for Clinical Development, Institute for Vaccine Research and Development, Hokkaido University (HU-IVReD), Sapporo, Japan.

Background: Memory CD8 T cells sense inflammation and rapidly produce interferon-γ (IFN-γ) independent of cognate antigens. This innate-like property, called bystander activation, is involved in early host defense before the antigen-specific memory response. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this activation remain unknown.
