Article Abstract

Characterizing the fragility, resistance, and resilience of marshes is critical for understanding their role in reducing storm damages and for helping to manage the recovery of these natural defenses. This study uses high-resolution aerial imagery to quantify the impacts of Hurricane Michael, a category 5 hurricane, on coastal salt marshes in the Florida Panhandle, USA. Marsh damage was classified into several categories, including deposition of sediment or wrack, fallen trees, vegetation loss, and conversion to open water. The marshes were highly resistant to storm damages even under extreme conditions; only 2% of the 173,259 km of marshes in the study area were damaged-a failure rate much lower than that of artificial defenses. Marshes may be more resistant than resilient to storm impacts; damaged marshes were slow to recover, and only 16% of damaged marshes had recovered 6 months after landfall. Marsh management mattered for resistance and resilience; marshes on publicly-managed lands were less likely to be damaged and more likely to recover quickly from storm impacts than marshes on private land, emphasizing the need to incentivize marsh management on private lands. These results directly inform policy and practice for hazard mitigation, disaster recovery, adaptation, and conservation, particularly given the potential for more intense hurricane landfalls as the climate changes.

The coexistence of antibiotics (AB) and microplastics (MP) in the environment has led to the formation of AB-MP complexes, posing several ecological and public health challenges. This review explores the mechanisms driving AB adsorption onto MPs, including diverse interactions (hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and ionic exchange) and their role in maintaining the persistence and mobility of the complexes. These complexes have been reported to serve as reservoirs/vectors for antimicrobial resistance (AMR), disrupt microbial communities, and enhance the bioavailability of ABs, thus posing various threats affecting biodiversity health and ecosystem stability.

Conservation planning for environmental water to climate refugia in the manageable Murray-Darling Basin.

One mechanism for improving the resilience of freshwater systems affected by climate change is to use environmental water to support refugial habitats which allow species, ecosystems and functions to persist and recover after severe droughts. We applied systematic conservation planning (SCP) to prioritise wetlands and lakes with the aim of informing the delivery of environmental water for the creation and protection of refugia habitat in the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia. SCP uses a complimentary algorithm to generate planning solutions that protect all target ecological assets for the lowest "cost" of the management constraints considered.

This study presents the first attempt on plant biomonitoring of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in East Kolkata Wetland (EKW), a Ramsar site in India, using Alternanthera ficoidea (L.). A polluted site, Captain Bheri (CB) and a control area, Kansabati River Basin (KRB) are chosen to compare the severity of the PAHs pollution of the wetland by examining wetland sediment and wetland plant parts (leaf, root, stem, rhizobium).
