In non-endemic settings, transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) is rare but potentially fatal and becoming more common with globalization. We present two pediatric cases that demonstrate donor screening using questionnaires is subject to error and that TTM should be considered with fever following numerous transfusions in children, particularly sickle cell patients.

Background And Objectives: Blood transfusion is essential in healthcare but carries inherent risks of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), syphilis and malaria transmission. National sero-epidemiology data on major transfusion-transmitted infections (TTI) in blood donors are lacking in India. This review aimed to estimate the prevalence of TTI in India, examine zonal variations, assess donor demographics and testing methodologies and analyse prevalence trends to further provide recommendations for blood safety.

CD47 is an antiphagocytic ("don't eat me") signal expressed on all cells that inhibits programmed cell removal of self, and loss of this molecule by aging erythrocytes is associated with increased susceptibility to clearance by macrophages.
