Ophidiomycosis threatens snakes worldwide. We swabbed free-ranging Lake Erie watersnakes (Nerodia sipedon insularum) for quantitative PCR detection of Ophidiomyces ophidiicola before and after group and individual holding in pillowcases. Our results indicate that group, rather than individual, holding does not significantly increase detection of O. ophidiicola DNA.

Northern pine snakes () in New Jersey often test positive for ophidiomycosis. In this paper, we use qPCR to examine changes in prevalence from 2018 to 2023, and differences by age, sex, and morphological sampling locations.

Ophidiomycosis, caused by the keratinophilic fungus (Oo), is an emerging threat to snake populations, yet its epidemiology in Europe remains underexplored. We investigated the distribution of Oo across free-ranging snake populations in Italy, integrating both recent field samples and historical museum specimens. Our survey involved 423 snakes representing 17 species from 17 regions, with Oo detected in 32 snakes from five different species.

The Sardinian grass snake, , is an island-endemic subspecies with a restricted and highly fragmented distribution confined to Sardinia, Italy. Information on its reproductive biology and wild offspring remain scarce in the scientific literature. This present study reports the first recorded data on a clutch of eggs laid by a wild melanistic female that exhibited lethargy when observed basking, prompting a brief period of health monitoring and screening for the presence of the pathogenic fungus (Oo).

Emerging infectious diseases are increasingly recognized as a significant threat to global biodiversity conservation. Elucidating the relationship between pathogens and the host microbiome could lead to novel approaches for mitigating disease impacts. Pathogens can alter the host microbiome by inducing dysbiosis, an ecological state characterized by a reduction in bacterial alpha diversity, an increase in pathobionts, or a shift in beta diversity.

Chrysosporium-related fungi refers to an assemblage of fungi belonging to the Nannizziopsis, Ophidiomyces, and Paranannizziopsis genera. Chrysosporium-related fungi infection results in various skin lesions, such as necrosis and ulcers, in both captive and free-roaming reptiles. To update the prevalence of ophidiomycosis in Taiwan, which was first detected in 2019, we conducted a large-scale ecological survey of free-roaming native snakes with skin lesions in Taiwan.
