Article Abstract

Core-shell structured FeO/CeO@MnO microspheres were fabricated and used as solid-phase microextraction coating for determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water samples. XPS spectra demonstrated the generation of abundant surface oxygen on FeO/CeO@MnO microspheres, which provided binding sites for enhancement of analyte extraction. Under optimized conditions, the proposed method presented good linearity in the concentration range 0.04-100 ng mL, with low limits of detection varying from 0.38 to 3.57 ng L for eight PAHs. Relative standard deviations for a single fiber and five batches of fibers were in the ranges of 4.1-8.2% and 7.1-11.4%, respectively. The proposed method was successfully used for determination of PAHs in real river water samples with recoveries ranging from 87.1 to 115.9%. The proposed method using as-prepared FeO/CeO@MnO microspheres as SPME coating exhibit significant potential for real sample analysis due to its excellent reproducibility, high sensitivity, and good linearity.

Elevated As(III) pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are two primary environmental concerns associated with flooded paddy soils. Herein, a novel biochar@birnessite composite microsphere was engineered using a biochar, birnessite and sodium alginate formulation. The microspheres were applied along with nitrate to examine their efficacy in suppressing As(III) mobilization and GHG emissions in an As-contaminated flooded paddy soil.

Antimony (Sb) is one of the most concerning toxic metals globally, making the study of methods for efficiently removing Sb(III) from water increasingly urgent. This study uses graphene oxide and chitosan as the matrix (GOCS), modifying them with FeCl and four MnO to form iron-manganese oxide (FM/GC) at a Fe/Mn molar ratio of 4:1. FM/GC quaternary composite microspheres are prepared, showing that FM/GC obtained from different MnO exhibits significant differences in the ability to remove Sb(III) from neutral solutions.

Removal of Cr(VI) from Wastewater Using Graphene Oxide Chitosan Microspheres Modified with α-FeO(OH).

Materials (Basel)

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution Control Theory and Technology, Guilin University of Technology, Guilin 541004, China.

Graphene oxide and chitosan microspheres modified with α−FeO(OH) (α−FeO(OH)/GOCS) are prepared and utilized to investigate the performance and mechanism for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions and the possibility of Fe secondary pollution. Batch experiments were carried out to identify the effects of pH, mass, and volume ratio (m/v), coexisting ions, time (t), temperature (T), and Cr(VI) initial concentration (C0) on Cr(VI) removal, and to evaluate adsorption kinetics, equilibrium isotherm, and thermodynamics, as well as the possibility of Fe secondary pollution. The results showed that Cr(VI) adsorption increased with C0, t, and T but decreased with increasing pH and m/v.

Adsorption of arsenic onto iron-based adsorption media has been established as a convenient method for the removal of arsenic from contaminated water. The study describes the efficiency of iron oxide coated hollow poly(methyl methacrylate) microspheres (FHM) as an adsorptive media for the removal of arsenic from water. Hollow poly(methyl methacrylate) microspheres (HPMM) were synthesized by solvent evaporation and an electroless plating technique and the surface of the polymer was coated with iron oxide (FeO) particles.

Photocatalytic Activity of Radial Rutile Titanium(IV) Oxide Microspheres for Aerobic Oxidation of Organics.

Radial rutile TiO nanorod homomesocrystals (TiO -NR HOMCs) or the so-called "sea urchin-like TiO microspheres" were synthesized by using a hydrothermal method. TiO -NR HOMCs show photocatalytic activity for aerobic oxidative degradation of 2-naphthol under irradiation of UV- and visible light. Furthermore, extremely small iron oxide clusters were formed on the surface of TiO -NR HOMCs (FeO /TiO -NR HOMCs) by the chemisorption-calcination technique to reduce the band gap.
