The study focused on biomarkers of kidney injury as predictors of mortality in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) in a long-term follow-up (median 104 months). KIM-1, NAG and NGAL were assessed from urine, NT-proBNP from blood samples. 149 patients (age 62 ± 12 years) with CHF (mean EF 30% [IQR 24-40%]) were enrolled. 79 (53%) patients died. Cox regression analysis revealed Log2NAG (HR: 1.46, CI: 1.12-1.89), Log2KIM-1 (HR: 1.23, CI: 1.02-1.49) and Log2NT-proBNP (HR: 1.50, CI: 1.32-1.72) as significant predictors of all-cause mortality as opposed to Log2NGAL (HR: 1.04, CI: 0.90-1.20). Log2NAG remained a significant predictor of all-cause mortality in a multivariate Cox regression model but lost its predictive value in combination with Log2NT-proBNP. The 10-year follow-up suggests NAG as a predictive tubular marker in CHF patients.

There is a lack of longitudinal data on type 2 diabetes (T2D) in low- and middle-income countries. We leveraged the electronic health records (EHR) system of a publicly funded academic institution to establish a retrospective cohort with longitudinal data to facilitate benchmarking, surveillance, and resource planning of a multi-ethnic T2D population in Malaysia. This cohort included 15,702 adults aged ≥ 18 years with T2D who received outpatient care (January 2002-December 2020) from Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

BackgroundAllostatic load (AL), an umbrella term for the physiological response to chronic stress, is different in women and men. AL has also been associated with all-cause dementia.ObjectiveThe current study investigates if AL clusters differently in men and women, and if these sex-based clusters are associated with all-cause dementia.

Cardiac hypertrophy is a common adaptation to cardiovascular stress and often a prelude to heart failure. We examined how S-palmitoylation of the small GTPase, Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (Rac1), impacts cardiomyocyte stress signaling. Mutation of the cysteine-178 palmitoylation site impaired activation of Rac1 when overexpressed in cardiomyocytes.

Importance: Patients with kidney failure (KF) receiving long-term dialysis have increased incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF). Patients with KF and AF have increased risk of stroke, death, and bleeding compared with age-matched cohorts. In KF, the use of oral anticoagulants (OACs) increases hemorrhage risk, offsetting potential benefits and making left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) a potentially promising solution for risk reduction in AF.

Background: Acute heart failure (AHF) significantly contributes to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, bearing a substantial socioeconomic burden. While the dynamics of chronic heart failure have been extensively explored in global patient cohorts, comprehensive data specific to AHF remain limited.
Methods: This retrospective, single-center, real-world study comprises hospitalized patients with AHF, admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Vienna, Austria, between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2019.
