During cortical development, newly born neurons migrate radially or tangentially from their origin to expand the cortex. Simultaneously, neuron-derived factors support angiogenesis, and an elaborate network of blood cerebral vessels develops in the cortex. Traditionally, blood cerebral vessels were considered to support the growing cortex or migrating neurons by providing nutrients and oxygen.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a greater prevalence of deficits in social interactions and repetitive behaviours, which are influenced by hereditary and environmental factors. How environmental factors influence genetically predisposed individuals remains unknown. Here, we provide new evidence of the interplay between social behaviour and environmental influences, by manipulating perceived safety and threat levels in ube3a mutant zebrafish, a mutation that is linked to Angelman syndrome and ASD.

Light can serve as a tunable trigger for neurobioengineering technologies, enabling probing, control, and enhancement of brain function with unmatched spatiotemporal precision. Yet, these technologies often require genetic or structural alterations of neurons, disrupting their natural activity. Here, we introduce the Graphene-Mediated Optical Stimulation (GraMOS) platform, which leverages graphene's optoelectronic properties and its ability to efficiently convert light into electricity.

Background: Facial mask wearing may disrupt facial emotion recognition (FER). The impact of masks on FER and associated eye movement patterns among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and those with psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) remained unclear.
Methods: 180 ethnic Chinese individuals completed the FER task with eye-tracking, including two separate samples: 37 PLEs with 53 matched controls, and 45 ASD with 45 matched controls.

Many autistic children demonstrate sensory integration differences that impact their participation in daily living activities and tasks. Occupational Therapy using Ayres Sensory Integration (OT-ASI) is an evidence-based intervention for autistic children that addresses the sensory integrative factors impacting daily living skills and participation in a variety of tasks and activities. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the recommended evidence-based practice for autism to improve a range of developmental domains.
