In this study, we investigated the protonation of the amine group in epoxy resins prepared using amine-based curing agents by theoretical methods. Density functional theory (DFT)-based free-energy calculations of the corresponding deprotonation subreactions showed that the amine group of the epoxy resin is protonated at equilibrium depending on the location of the amine group when the epoxy resin is embedded in water under standard conditions. Additional DFT calculations demonstrate that the energetic barrier for breaking the ether bond of the epoxy resin is lowered by about 0.6 eV as a result of the cooperative effect of HO dissociation and that the transition-state energy for breaking the amine group bond is lowered by about 0.4 eV after the protonation of the amine group. Comparing the transition-state energies, we predict that the bond breakage of the protonated amine groups is the principal process causing the weakening of epoxy resins under wet conditions.

A key challenge in capturing CO from postcombustion gases is humidity due to competitive adsorption between CO and HO. Multivariate (MTV) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered a promising option to address this problem, e.g.

Inspired by "the composition of catechol and amine groups in the adhesive proteins" of marine mussel and "brick-and-mortar" structure of nacre, we use polydopamine (PDA) as "mortar", graphene oxides (GO) nanosheets as "brick", and Pd ions as interfacial reinforcer, to fabricate nacre-like Pd enhanced PDA functionalized GO membranes (Pd@PDA/GO) with vacuum filtration-assisted assembly method. Meanwhile, in situ reduced Pd nanoclusters by PDA chains were well constrained within the resultant Pd@PDA/GO artificial nacre composites. Good interfacial adhesion with dense packing of the GO nanosheets was further confirmed with sub-nano level microstructure characterization by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy.

The ongoing use of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) in conflicts, assassinations, and terrorist attacks means that the detection and identification of these compounds are crucial. The forensic identification of organophosphorus nerve agents (OPNAs) and their precursors and degradation products remains challenging due to the destructive nature and extensive preparation required for conventional chromatographic methods. In this study, we characterise precursor and degradation products of Novichok analogues, including 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine, N,N-diethylpentanimidamide, N,N-dipropylbutanimidamide, using 2D ¹H-¹³C heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence (HMQC) NMR.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by impairments in motor control following the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons located in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Environmental pesticides such as Paraquat (PQ) and Maneb (MB) contribute to the onset of PD by inducing oxidative stress (OS). This study evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of moderate physical activity (PA) on both motor and non-motor symptoms in a Wistar rat model of Paraquat and Maneb (PQ/MB) induced PD.
