Article Abstract

Writing a history of a scientific theory is always difficult because it requires to focus on some key contributors and to "reconstruct" some supposed influences. In the 1970s, a new way of performing science under the name "chaos" emerged, combining the mathematics from the nonlinear dynamical systems theory and numerical simulations. To provide a direct testimony of how contributors can be influenced by other scientists or works, we here collected some writings about the early times of a few contributors to chaos theory. The purpose is to exhibit the diversity in the paths and to bring some elements-which were never published-illustrating the atmosphere of this period. Some peculiarities of chaos theory are also discussed.

Stabilizing the retromer complex rescues synaptic dysfunction and endosomal trafficking deficits in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model.

Acta Neuropathol Commun

Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences and Department of Clinical Pathology, Linköping University, 58185, Linköping, Sweden.

Disruptions in synaptic transmission and plasticity are early hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Endosomal trafficking, mediated by the retromer complex, is essential for intracellular protein sorting, including the regulation of amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing. The VPS35 subunit, a key cargo-recognition component of the retromer, has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, with mutations such as L625P linked to early-onset AD.

This qualitative study explores what factors influence teaming in behavioral health settings, from the perspective of behavioral health providers. Twenty-four participants from a range of behavioral health professions engaged in semi-structured interviews. Using a grounded theory approach, data were analyzed, and a "prism" model was developed to capture the complexities of behavioral health providers' perceptions of factors influencing teaming in various mental health and/or substance use disorder treatment programs.

This study investigates how the seven core resilience principles are integrated into assessments of forest system resilience to natural or human-induced disturbances across engineering, ecological, and social-ecological resilience concepts. Following PRISMA guidelines, a literature search in the Web of Science database using the keywords "resilience", "forest" and "ecosystem services" yielded 1828 studies, of which 330 met the selection criteria. The most commonly used criterion was diversity, a sub-criterion of "diversity and redundancy", appearing in 50% of studies.

Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for morbid obesity, but patient outcomes differ greatly because of a variety of phenotypes, comorbidities, and postoperative adherence. In bariatric care, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are becoming revolutionary tools because traditional predictive models based on BMI and demographic variables are unable to account for these complexities. To put it simply, AI is a branch of computer science that enables machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence.

Quantum simulations of many-body systems are among the most promising applications of quantum computers. In particular, models based on strongly correlated fermions are central to our understanding of quantum chemistry and materials problems, and can lead to exotic, topological phases of matter. However, owing to the non-local nature of fermions, such models are challenging to simulate with qubit devices.
