The photopic negative response (PhNR) is a negative component of the photopic flash electroretinogram that follows the b-wave and is thought to arise from the retinal ganglion cells. Reduction in its amplitude in idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) has been previously documented using formal electroretinography. This study explored the use of a handheld device (RETeval, LKC technologies, Gaithersburg, MD, USA) in 72 IIH patients of varying stages and severity (and seven controls) and investigated associations between PhNR parameters and disease severity. PhNR amplitudes at 72 ms (P) and p-ratio (ratio to b-wave peak value) differed significantly across groups, with a trend towards smaller amplitudes in those with severe IIH, defined as papilloedema with Modified Frisén Scale (MFS) ≥ 3, retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) ≥ 150 μm or atrophic papilloedema ( = 0.0048 and = 0.018 for P72 and p-ratio, respectively). PhNR parameters did not correlate with MFS, RNFL thickness, standard automated perimetry mean deviation or macular ganglion cell layer volume. This study suggests that PhNR measurement using a handheld device is feasible and could potentially augment the assessment of disease severity in IIH. The clinical utility of PhNR monitoring in IIH patients requires further investigation.

Background: Portable sphero-cylinder refraction is useful for remote medical missions and self-checking. A novel, inexpensive, handheld optical scope with an internal vision chart and adjustable diopter lens, called the Moptim MRT-200, was therefore validated.
Methods: Young, capable patients from a pediatric eye practice had dry refraction estimates with the Moptim MRT-200, Adaptica 2WIN photoscreener, and Monocular Retinomax compared with actual refined retinoscopy.

This rapid systematic review aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy (concurrent validity, predictive ability, reliability) of indirect calorimetry (IC) for measuring resting energy expenditure (REE) in adults with overweight or obesity. PubMed and Web of Science searched for studies measuring REE by IC in adults with overweight or obesity and reported primary outcomes: concurrent validity, predictive ability, or reliability. N = 22 studies were included that evaluated n = 10 IC devices.

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate whether dosimetric sparing of uninvolved normal tissues, including skin/subcutaneous flaps, affects acute and late toxicities in preoperative image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT) for lower extremity soft tissue sarcomas (LE-STS).
Methods: Patients with LE-STS from a phase 2 preoperative IG-IMRT trial (flap-sparing-IMRT, 2005-2009) and a prospectively maintained institutional database (standard-IMRT, 2005-2020) were propensity matched by age, sex, tumor size, grade, location, wound closure, and interval from IG-IMRT to surgery; all received 50 Gy in 25 fractions preoperatively. The primary outcome was major wound complication (MWC).

Background And Objectives: Enhanced environmental disinfection is linked to reduced hospital-acquired infection rates. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an emerging disinfection technology, a filtered far-UV-C handheld (FFUHH) device, for reducing bacterial loads on high-touch surfaces in shared clinical workrooms, and to isolate, identify and characterize clinically significant environmental pathogens.
Methods: We compared samples from high-touch items (dictation device, mouse, armchair, desk, and keyboard) before and after FFUHH treatment.
Background: A significant contributory factor to the brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome index of bulldogs is the diameter of their tracheas. Bulldogs are predisposed to tracheal hypoplasia. A non-invasive, financially reasonable and widely accessible screening test for tracheal diameter would be useful for assessing the most appropriate dogs to breed from within bulldog populations and may help in predicting results following upper airway surgery.
