Article Abstract

Dendritic cells (DCs) are key arms of immune system, which act in antigen presenting processes, and are considered as a bridge between innate and adaptive immune responses. DCs are found in both lymphoid and non-lymphoid organs. They are called interdigitating dendritic cells (IDCs) in secondary lymphoid organs. IDCs lack lineage surface markers and are positive for S-100 and vimentin. IDC sarcoma (IDCS) is a very rare neoplasm, which mainly affects lymph nodes, though there are reports of extra-nodal involvement. IDCS is thought to have poor prognosis. Although there is no consensus on the treatment modalities, such options as radical surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are performed depending on severity and site of the lesion. In this study, we present a case of IDCS in a 53-year-old male with a history of several skin lesions and prior diagnoses of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and metatypical carcinoma (MTC).

Although human lymph node architecture varies by site, the intranodal distribution of interdigitating dendritic cells (DCs) remains poorly understood. To address this, we compared the morphology of submandibular, paratracheal, mesenteric, and inguinal nodes obtained from 24 donated cadavers. Immunoreactivity was evaluated by comparing these cadaveric nodes with surgically resected lymph nodes obtained from five old-aged patients with nonmetastatic cancer.

PDL1 Expression and Outcomes in Histiocytic Neoplasms.

Case Rep Oncol

July 2025

Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, USA.

Introduction: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) and interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) are both extremely rare and aggressive histiocytic neoplasms that are most often treated with lymphoma-based chemotherapy; however, there is growing use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in the second- or further-line settings as prognosis is typically poor in these neoplasms.

Case Presentations: We describe two cases: first, HS in a 60-year-old man with primary tumor in the right anterior lower limb, and second, IDCS in an 82-year-old man in the right para-parotid region after initial wide local excision of a right postauricular mass suggestive of a pleomorphic undifferentiated sarcoma. Systemic imaging showed retroperitoneal, inguinal, and pelvic adenopathy in the first case and no distant metastases in the second case.

Background: Macrophages and interdigitating dendritic cells (DCs) are key professional antigen-presenting cells. However, DCs appear to be absent in healthy nasal mucosa, despite the extensive ciliated respiratory epithelium being highly exposed to various antigens.

Methods: Using histological specimens from 20 elderly cadavers, we examined the distribution of immunoreactive cells in the nasal vestibular skin, mucocutaneous junction, and ciliated mucosa.

Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) are attracting increasing attention due to their low cost, earth abundance, and safety. So far, they have been regarded as a promising battery system for large scale grid applications, while here, we demonstrate prospects of their use to power portable devices. We report the fabrication of a rechargeable ZIB with interdigitated geometry capable of powering a commercial sensor for days.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is an exceedingly rare hematological neoplasm arising from dendritic cells that presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly in cases of disseminated disease. Here, a 33-year-old woman presented with discomfort of the left pharynx accompanied by nasopharyngeal and cervical mass for 3 months. The histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of IDCS as the neoplastic cells were spindle or ovoid in shape, forming fascicles or whorls, and were positive for S-100, vimentin and CD163 but negative for CD21, CD23, CD35 and CD1a.
