Article Abstract

The true identity of the diethyl ether adduct of tungsten(IV) chloride, WCl(EtO), has been in doubt since 1985. Initially postulated as the bis-adduct, WCl(EtO), questions arose when elemental analyses were more in line with a mono-ether adduct, viz. WCl(EtO). It was proposed that this was due to the thermal instability of the bis-adduct. Here, we report the room-temperature X-ray crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface characteristics of trans-tetrachloridobis(diethyl ether)tungsten(IV), trans-WCl(EtO) or trans-[WCl(CHO)]. The compound crystallizes, with half of the molecule in the asymmetric unit, in the centrosymmetric space group P2/n. The W-O distance is 2.070 (2) Å, while the W-Cl distances are 2.3586 (10) and 2.3554 (10) Å.

Keratitis, characterized by inflammation of the cornea, presents a diagnostic challenge, particularly when the etiology remains elusive. Here, we report a perplexing case of keratitis in a 35-year-old patient with no identifiable risk factors or predisposing conditions. Despite the initial uncertainty, empirical treatment with antiviral medications led to a rapid resolution of symptoms and improvement in corneal health.

Primary leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant kidney tumor. The diagnosis of this disease is usually made on the basis of histological examination because it lacks specific clinical or radiological characteristics. Differentiation between leiomyosarcoma and sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma can be challenging because spindle cell morphology is observed in both tumors.

Toward Powerful Probes of Neutrino Self-Interactions in Supernovae.

Neutrinos remain mysterious. As an example, enhanced self-interactions (νSI), which would have broad implications, are allowed. At the high neutrino densities within core-collapse supernovae, νSI should be important, but robust observables have been lacking.

Article Synopsis
  • * A rare inherited disorder due to LCAT deficiency primarily results in kidney problems (nephropathy), which is often the leading cause of death, along with other symptoms like corneal opacity and low levels of high-density lipoprotein.
  • * This case study discusses a 35-year-old man who faced renal failure and proteinuria; he underwent kidney biopsies that revealed specific damage patterns and eventually led to a diagnosis of LCAT deficiency after developing corneal opacity.
