Article Abstract

The abstract concept of sameness forms the basis of higher-order cognitive operations, including mathematics and language. Historically believed to be unique to humans, evidence of abstract-concept learning in recent decades has been demonstrated in a range of phylogenetically diverse species, indicating that the ability to judge sameness relations is a general process resulting from convergent evolution. However, to date, no research has demonstrated evidence of such learning in any canid species. We trained domestic dogs ( = 6) on a two-choice olfactory matching-to-sample task using a training set of 48 odors in trial-unique sessions. Upon meeting an acquisition criterion (two consecutive sessions ≥ 83% correct), we assessed abstract-concept learning by testing for transfer to novel odors. Dogs matched novel odors with above-chance accuracy and exceeded baseline levels, satisfying previously proposed criteria for full abstract-concept learning. Our findings provide the first evidence of MTS concept learning in dogs, illustrating qualitative similarities with other species. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

Medical education scholars, particularly those early in their careers, frequently encounter challenges in integrating theory into their research, a common point of feedback from peer review processes such as the Research in Medical Education (RIME) series. Theory, defined as interconnected ideas or principles, offers a structured lens to understand complex educational phenomena. It helps organize existing knowledge, predict outcomes, and explain relationships within data, thereby constructing coherent narratives that link educational practices to learning outcomes.

Neurophysiology is crucial but often-intimidating subject for undergraduate students. To address the challenge of "neurophobia" educators have developed myriad techniques to inspire students and enhance their interest in the discipline. We therefore sought employ one such innovation to further engage our students, leveraging students' familiarity with food to make the abstract concept of the action potential accessible.

Background: Generalizing the concept of compassion fatigue across healthcare settings or professions is difficult because compassion fatigue is a complex and abstract concept. Compassion fatigue is described as a result in the form of behaviors and emotions resulting from learning of another person's traumatic event. Compassion fatigue is considered a 'cost of caring.

Sentences conveying abstract meanings are crucial tools for high-level thinking and communication. Previous research has sparked a debate on whether abstract concepts rely on the representation of the sensory-motor brain areas. We explored this issue with the assumption that abstract meanings at the sentence level could invoke the sensory-motor regions a context-dependent fashion.
