Article Abstract

The global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still threatening human health, economy, and social life worldwide. As a counteraction for this devastating disease, a number of vaccines are being developed with unprecedented speed combined with new technologies. As COVID-19 vaccines are being developed in the absence of a licensed human coronavirus vaccine, there remain further questions regarding the long-term efficacy and safety of the vaccines, as well as immunological mechanisms in depth. This review article discusses the current status of COVID-19 vaccine development, mainly focusing on antigen design, clinical trials in later stages, and immunological considerations for further study.

Background: Invasive central nervous system (CNS) aspergillosis is rare among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients due to preserved neutrophil function, despite significant CD4+ T-cell depletion. Diagnosis typically requires histopathologic confirmation, but polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing has introduced new challenges due to its high sensitivity but limited specificity.

Case Presentation: We describe a newly diagnosed 43-year-old HIV-positive male with concurrent Hodgkin lymphoma who presented with progressive neurological decline and a ring-enhancing brain lesion.

Introduction: The Japan Society of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (JSAM) and experts on the safety of acupuncture and moxibustion (AM) in Japan have focused on safety improvement among acupuncturists, moxibustionists (AMists), and AM-practicing physicians. This article provides an overview of the activities conducted by academic experts in AM safety, primarily from the JSAM, to improve AM safety.

Discussion: The JSAM formed the Safety Committee in 1998 to collect data regarding AM-related adverse events, provide relevant information to members, and conduct educational activities to prevent malpractice.

Predictors of mortality and hospitalised exacerbations in obstructive airway diseases.

ERJ Open Res

September 2025

Department of Bioanalysis, Pharmaceutical Care Unit, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium.

Background: In Belgium, age-standardised hospital admission and mortality rates for asthma and COPD are higher than the European average. Understanding the factors that lead to a hospitalised exacerbation and/or mortality is needed to optimise patient management.

Methods: Patients ≥18 years old obtaining two claims for drugs for obstructive airway diseases (ATC code R03) in 1 year between 2017 and 2022 were identified in Belgian nationwide claims-based data.

Lung cancer associated with cystic airspaces (LCCA) refers to primary lung cancers presenting with cystic airspaces accompanied by solid components, representing a relatively uncommon imaging and pathological phenotype. Although high-resolution imaging techniques, such as computerized tomography, are the primary diagnostic tools, early diagnosis remains challenging due to the similarity of its symptoms to other pulmonary diseases. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), fatty acids with multiple unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds, constitute a crucial class of lipids. While the vast diversity of PUFA species arises from their structural variations, most of them are poorly investigated due to their limited availability. Here, we utilize solid-phase synthesis of PUFAs, which we have recently developed, to construct a PUFA library.
