Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nasal packing on the surgical success and postoperative complications of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EnDCR) without using stents and mucosal flaps.
Methods: The retrospective study comprised of 75 eyes of 65 consecutive patients undergoing EnDCR with the biting and removing technique. The patients were assigned to 2 groups depending on whether the biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam was used or not (the packing group, 34 eyes; the nonpacking group, 41 eyes). At least 6 months after the EnDCR, the postoperative outcomes including anatomical and functional successes, and the postoperative complications such as synechia, granuloma, and bleeding were compared between the packing and nonpacking groups.
Results: Synechia was lower in the packing group (23.5% versus 24.4%) but it was not statistically significant (P = 0.93). There were also no significant differences in the granuloma and bleeding complications between the 2 groups (respectively, P = 0.72, P = 0.08). The success rates of anatomical and functional reached 88% in the packing group compared with 82.9%, and 75.6% in the nonpacking group (respectively, P = 0.74, P = 0.76).
Conclusions: The present study findings suggest that both groups have no superiorities over each other in the surgical outcomes after the EnDCR. However, further randomized studies are recommended before the generalization can be made.

The genome stores and processes approximately 1.5 gigabytes of encoded information. In this article, we propose that the eukaryotic genome and its adaptable three-dimensional packing in the form of chromatin offer a valuable template for the system architecture of DNA-based digital computers.

Bolaamphiphiles─amphiphilic molecules with polar groups at each of the two ends of a hydrophobic tail with pH-sensitive spontaneous molecular curvatures, endow membranes of extremophiles with an exquisite balance between stability (or robustness) and adaptability (or plasticity). But how the presence (or real-time insertion) of bolaamphiphiles influences lamellar lipid membranes is poorly understood. Using a combination of time-resolved confocal fluorescence microscopy, in situ small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS), and neutron spin echo (NSE) measurements, we monitor here the pH-dependent interactions of nanoscopic vesicles of a representative bolaamphiphile─a glucolipid consisting of a single glucose headgroup and a C18:1 (oleyl) fatty acid tail (G-C18:1)─with the membranes of an essentially cylindrical fluid-phase phospholipid (dioleoylphosphatidylcholine, DOPC).

Through the use of fluorescence probes, FTIR spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, and surface pressure-area isotherms, it is demonstrated that lowering the pH increases the hydrophobicity of DPPC lipid vesicles in the gel state. This effect is noticeable at pH 2. The increase in hydrophobicity is comparable to that produced by hypertonic stress, in which vesicles shrink due to a decrease in volume and an increase in curvature.

Organic-inorganic hybrid thiocyanates include a variety of compositions and structure types. To develop a better understanding of the interactions that control the crystal structure in this family of materials, six hybrid thiocyanate halide compounds with the general formula ACd(SCN)X (A = CHNH, CHCHNH, CH(CH)NH, CH(CH)NH; X = Cl, Br) have been synthesized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that five of the six compounds crystallize with triclinic 1̅ symmetry, the lone exception being (CH(CH)NH)Cd(SCN)Cl which adopts 2/ symmetry.

Background: Surgical procedures often entail significant blood loss, potentially leading to various complications. Thus, reducing perioperative bleeding is crucial to enhancing patient outcomes. This study systematically evaluates and conducts a meta-analysis on the efficacy of tranexamic acid (TXA) in patients undergoing burn surgery.
