Phytosterols (PSs) are plant-originated steroids. Over 250 PSs have been isolated, and each plant species contains a characteristic phytosterol composition. A wide number of studies have reported remarkable pharmacological effects of PSs, acting as chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antiatherosclerotic agents. However, PS bioavailability is a key issue, as it can be influenced by several factors (type, source, processing, preparation, delivery method, food matrix, dose, time of administration into the body, and genetic factors), and the existence of a close relationship between their chemical structures (e.g., saturation degree and side-chain length) and low absorption rates has been stated. In this sense, the present review intends to provide in-depth data on PS therapeutic potential for human health, also emphasizing their preclinical effects and bioavailability-related issues.

This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential of functional food active ingredients in cancer prevention and therapy. It outlines the multifaceted anticancer mechanisms of bioactive compounds-such as polyphenols, carotenoids, omega-3 fatty acids, phytosterols, alkaloids, isothiocyanates, polysaccharides, phenolic acids, flavonols, and amide-bearing compounds-which include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, induction of apoptosis and autophagy, modulation of the tumor microenvironment, interference with cell cycle regulation and signaling pathways, and regulation of cancer-related microRNA expression. The review further discusses the synergistic effects of these compounds when combined with conventional treatments like radiotherapy and chemotherapy, highlighting their role in enhancing efficacy and mitigating side effects.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by amyloid-β deposition and neuroinflammation. Emerging evidence implicates gut microbiota dysbiosis and gut-brain axis dysfunction in AD pathogenesis, while phytosterols-plant sterols similar to cholesterol-modulate microbiota composition, lipid metabolism, and inflammatory pathways. To review evidence of phytosterols as modulators of the gut-brain axis and neuroinflammation in AD, outlining mechanisms, therapeutic potential, and delivery approaches.

Interleukin-2-inducible T-cell kinase (ITK) is an essential enzyme that plays a key role in both the activation and differentiation of T-cells. As a member of the Tec family of non-receptor tyrosine kinases, ITK is predominantly expressed in T cells, exerting a critical influence on T-cell receptor signaling and downstream pathways. Moreover, ITK regulates cytokine production, notably interleukin-2 (IL-2), and the differentiation of Th2 cells.
