Article Abstract

The replication band in the macronucleus of ciliated protozoa has fascinated microscopists since the 19 Century. It migrates through the nucleus, corresponding to a region of DNA replication and nascent chromatin assembly. A new study shows that calcium and actin filaments may participate in the formation and migration of the replication band.

Sub-anesthetic ketamine (KT) has become a promising rapid-acting antidepressant candidate, yet its mechanisms have not been comprehensively defined. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides millisecond recordings of cortical rhythms, exposing the rapid glutamatergic dynamics underlying ketamine's action. We synthesized evidence on KT-induced oscillatory and connectivity changes in healthy volunteers (HVs), major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD), relating neural signatures to symptomatic relief.

The alpha rhythm is a hallmark of electrophysiological resting-state brain activity, that serves as a biomarker in health and disease. Alpha power is far from uniform over time, exhibiting dynamic fluctuations. The likelihood of those power values can be captured by a decreasing exponential function, which in certain cases becomes bimodal.

Spatial attention is a key function enabling the selection of relevantinformation and meaningful behavioral responses and is likely implemented bydifferent neural mechanisms. In previous work, attention led to robust butuncorrelated modulations of Steady-State-Visual-Evoked-Potentials (SSVEPs) as amarker of early sensory gain and visual as well as motor alpha-band activity. Weprobed the behavioral relevance of attention-modulated trial-by-trialfluctuations of these measures.

Orexin effect on physiological pulsations of the human brain.

Sleep promotes cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to interstitial fluid (ISF) exchange in the brain facilitated by brain pulsations. Especially brain vasomotion and arterial pulsations modulated by noradrenaline drive the intracranial fluid dynamics. Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) entails lessened orexinergic output to wake-promoting systems including the noradrenergic locus coeruleus.

This study introduces an innovative method to improve photocatalytic degradation using the presence of an external magnetic field. Magnetically active γ-FeO nanoparticles were synthesized using a sustainable method by recycling waste toner powder, thereby offering an eco-friendly route to valorize hazardous e-waste. To engineer a highly effective photocatalyst, these nanoparticles were additionally decorated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets.
