Article Abstract

The aim of the present study was to macroscopically and microscopically describe the main pathological findings occurring in this invasive species, in order to better understand the real risks for naïve animals and humans. The present study was conducted on squirrels (n = 165), captured in the Maratea area and euthanatized with CO according to a population control of invasive species of the Italian Agriculture Ministry project (ex CIPE project) and conferred to the Department of Veterinary Medicine of Bari (Italy). Macroscopic analysis demonstrated heart, lung, and liver congestion, probably due to the euthanasia method, and variable lesions of bowel, liver, and kidney. The microscopically examination showed the presence of lymphocytic infiltration in the lower layers of the bowel, suggesting enteritis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systemic report of gross and microscopical anatomopathological lesions in in South Italy. The results could be useful to fill a gap of knowledge of this species in Italy.

The meadows represent a fundamental biological indicator for the assessment of the marine ecosystem's state of health. They also play an essential role in the conservation of coastal morphology. The composition, extent, and structure of the meadows are conditioned by the biological characteristics of the plant itself and by the environmental setting, considering the type and nature of the substrate, the geomorphology of the seabed, the hydrodynamics, the depth, the light availability, the sedimentation speed, etc.

The "Endless Diving Project-Step 36" took place in the harbor waters of the town of Maratea in Italy in September 2014. The goal of the project was an attempt by an experienced male diver, equipped with a wet 7-mm suit and a normal gas tank, to set the world record-breaking of nonstop underwater performance. We studied inflammatory, hematological, and endocrine responses during the extreme condition of the attempt.

Record linkage aims to identify records from multiple data sources that refer to the same entity of the real world. It is a well known data quality process studied since the second half of the last century, with an established pipeline and a rich literature of case studies mainly covering census, administrative or health domains. In this paper, a method to recognize matching records from real municipalities and banks through multiple similarity criteria and a Neural Network classifier is proposed: starting from a labeled subset of the available data, first several similarity measures are combined and weighted to build a feature vector, then a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) network is trained and tested to find matching pairs.
