Understanding the meanings of names given to endangered animals is important because these names might influence how local communities perceive the animals. Influenced by name connotations, these perceptions may shape how communities support or oppose our conservation efforts. Conducted across nine villages within the Batang Toru ecosystem, this research involved 90 respondents.

Wild orangutans (Pongo spp.) are captured and moved (wild-to-wild translocated) primarily to prevent crop foraging or out of concern for orangutans' survival in fragmented habitat. Little is known about wild-to-wild translocation frequency, circumstances, and possible species conservation and individual welfare outcomes.

Industrial expansion has brought humans and wildlife into closer contact, and added novel, complex dimensions to human-wildlife relationships. The seven great apes (chimpanzee, Bornean orangutan, Sumatran orangutan, Tapanuli orangutan, Eastern gorilla, Western gorilla, bonobo), the closest extant relatives to humans, have experienced substantial population declines resulting from anthropogenic activities. The effect of human activity on great ape behavioural ecology is therefore an emerging field of inquiry in primatology which has historically been minimally considered.

Rehabilitating and releasing orangutans back into the wild is one of the conservation strategies being pursued to conserve orangutans. However, the species determination between Sumatran, Tapanuli, and Bornean orangutans is essential for reintroduction to avoid outbreeding depression, which could lead to DNA hybridisation and increase the probability of recessive characters. Here, we reported on an investigation of three orangutans in which DNA forensic techniques were used to identify the species before release and reintroduction to their habitat.
