Dissimilarity-Overlap analysis of replicate enrichment communities.

Article Abstract

The taxonomic composition of microbial communities can vary substantially across habitats and within the same habitat over time. Efforts to build quantitative and predictive models of microbial population dynamics are underway, but fundamental questions remain. How different are population dynamics in different environments? Do communities that share the same taxa also exhibit identical dynamics? In vitro communities can help establish baseline expectations that are critical towards resolving these questions in natural communities. Here, we applied a recently developed tool, Dissimilarity-Overlap Analysis (DOA), to a set of experimental in vitro communities that differed in nutrient composition. The Dissimilarity and Overlap of these communities are negatively correlated in replicate habitats, as one would expect if microbial population dynamics were on average strongly convergent (or "universal") across these replicate habitats. However, the existence of such a negative correlation does not necessarily imply that population dynamics are always universal in all communities. Even in replicate, identical habitats, two different communities may contain the same set of taxa at different abundances in equilibrium. The formation of alternative states in community assembly is strongly associated with the presence of specific taxa in the communities. Our results benchmark DOA, providing support for some of its core assumptions, and suggest that communities sharing the same taxa and external abiotic factors generally (but not necessarily) have a negative correlation between Dissimilarity and Overlap.

Amidst the global shift toward cannabis legalization, this study examines medical cannabis (MC) sales as an indicator of economic activity and innovation. It explores associations between MC sales, and variables including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, amphetamine, cocaine and cannabis prevalence, and gross domestic product (GDP), using a fixed effects (FE) panel regression model. It also evaluates associations between cannabis legalization and MC sales over time using a dynamic Difference-in-Differences (DiD) approach with multiple time periods.

In this paper, we will present an analysis of three terms central to contemporary cultural critique: age, gender and migration, bringing them together in an approach we call "triangulation". We draw on Katy Gardner's ethnographic study of Bangladeshi migrants to London, Age, Narrative and Migration (2002), which addresses the three terms, to examine the interrelated identity constructions that are at stake in triangulation. In a second step, we analyze Monica Ali's novel Brick Lane (2003) as a pertinent literary example, in which aspects of age, gender, and migration come together in ways that may further illuminate and develop these as terms of cultural critique.

The evolutionary success of insects may be partly attributed to their profound ability to adjust metabolism in response to environmental stress or resource variability at a range of timescales. Metabolic flexibility encompasses the ability of an organism to adapt or respond to conditional changes in metabolic demand and tune fuel oxidation to match fuel availability. Here, we evaluate the mechanisms of metabolic flexibility in insects that are considered short-term, medium-term, and long-term responses.

Over the last decade, a range of research has demonstrated the detrimental impacts of policies criminalizing migration ("crimmigration") on Latinx mental health. In this study, we seek to examine youth perspectives on how crimmigration policies affect Latinx adolescents' connections to Latinx identity, culture, and communities and the implications for Latinx youth mental health. We explored how immigration enforcement policies affect Latinx youths' mental health using photovoice with ten youth in a high-deportation county in Atlanta in 2022.

Background: Acute heart failure (AHF) significantly contributes to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, bearing a substantial socioeconomic burden. While the dynamics of chronic heart failure have been extensively explored in global patient cohorts, comprehensive data specific to AHF remain limited.
