Cytochrome b is an essential electron transfer protein, which is ubiquitously found in living systems and involved in wide variety of biological processes. Tardigrades (also known as water bears), some of which are famous for desiccation resistance, have many proteins unique to them. Here, we report spectroscopic and structural characterization of a cytochrome b like protein from one of the desiccation-tolerant tardigrades, Ramazzottius varieornatus strain YOKOZUNA-1 (RvCytb ). A 1.4 Å resolution crystal structure revealed that RvCytb is a new cytochrome b protein specific to tardigrades.

Multivalent cations are commonly employed to accelerate sludge aggregation and granulation, yet they often compromise intragranular mass transfer and diminish microbial activity. Here, the effect of Fe(III) dosing on granule formation and anammox-driven nitrogen removal over a 110-day continuous operation was investigated. Fe(III) supplementation enhanced interactions with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), transforming flocculent biomass into highly porous granules and yielding a 67.

Sterols are essential isoprenoid derivatives that contribute to membrane structure and function. In plants, they also serve as precursors to phytohormones and specialized metabolites important for development, defense, and health. Although the sterol biosynthetic pathway is considered well-characterized, we report the discovery of a plant-specific cytochrome -like protein, CB5LP, as a critical component of phytosterol biosynthesis.

With the aim of expanding the possibilities of identifying termite species, in the present study we generated genetic data based on sequences of the mitochondrial gene encoding cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (COII) for termites (Blattodea: Isoptera) occurring in the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. The genetic data were obtained from 135 COII sequences identified in 28 genera and 48 species. These are the first COII sequences for 15 taxa (31.

Population genetics plays a critical role in creating policies for managing fisheries, conservation, and development of aquaculture. The golden snapper, Lutjanus johnii (Bloch, 1792), is a highly commercial and aquaculture important snapper species. This study used mitochondrial markers D-loop (151 specimens) and Cytochrome b (Cyt-b, 120 specimens) from 10 populations, including populations from the east South China Sea, the west South China Sea and the Strait of Malacca to investigate the genetic diversity, population connectivity, and historical demography of L.
