Changes to regulations by Food Standards Australia New Zealand have permitted the adjustment of must sugar levels with the addition of water in order to ensure a sound fermentation progress as well as mitigating excessive wine-alcohol levels. This study assessed the implications for Shiraz wine quality following a pre-fermentative must dilution (changing liquid-to-solid ratios), in comparison to juice substitution with water (constant liquid-to-solid ratios) that has previously been deemed a promising way to adjust wine-alcohol levels. While working within the legal limit of water addition to grape must, the effects of both approaches on wine quality parameters and sensory characteristics were rather similar, and of negligible nature. However, different implications between substitution and dilution appeared to be driven by grape maturity, and dilution was found to have a greater impact than substitution on some parameters at higher water implementation rates. In line with previous observations, longer hang-time followed by alcohol adjustments via pre-fermentation water addition were of limited merit compared to simply picking grapes earlier. This work provided further knowledge that supports informed decision making regarding the recently permitted approach of using water during winemaking.

Background: Previous studies involving cleanup via conventional solid-phase extraction (SPE) materials to overcome matrix effects for the polar organophosphonate and -phosphinate pesticides glyphosate, glufosinate, ethephon, fosetyl, and their various metabolites often showed limitations due to the existence of various matrix compounds in plant commodities with similar polarity. To overcome existing drawbacks, we utilized the unique selectivity provided by metal oxides as SPE materials. These were exploited in a novel automated online SPE-LC-MS/MS method which allowed analyte-specific trapping in the presence of excessive amounts of matrix compounds as typically contained in extracts of the Quick Polar Pesticides (QuPPe) method.

Introduction: Submarine environments pose unique challenges to maintaining physical activity and exercise routines due to confined spaces, demanding schedules, and limited resources. This study investigated submariners' physical activity patterns, sleep quality, and perceived exercise barriers in both land- and sea-based settings, with the goal of informing targeted health interventions.
Materials And Methods: Ethics approval was granted by the Defence Science and Technology Group and Edith Cowan University review panels.

Background: Most countries have endorsed a national action plan (NAP) on antimicrobial resistance. We previously used a governance framework to assess NAPs on antimicrobial resistance available for the period of 2020-21 from 114 countries, finding substantial variation worldwide in the commitment of resources to address an escalating global health challenge. We sought to expand and advance this analysis to include the NAPs of more low-income and middle-income countries, to cover the period of 2021-22, and to examine the strength of NAPs to address antimicrobial resistance.

Enteric fever, caused by the human-restricted bacteria Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (typhoid) and Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A, B, and C (paratyphoid), affects persons residing in, or travelling from, areas lacking safe water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure. Transmission is by the faecal-oral route. A gradual fever onset over 3-7 days with malaise, headache, and myalgia is typical.

Background: Micronutrient deficiencies are common in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), potentially contributing to adverse clinical outcomes. Hemodiafiltration with endogenous reinfusion (HFR) integrates convection, diffusion, and adsorption, potentially preserving essential nutrients better than traditional online hemodiafiltration (HDF). This study aimed to compare the acute effects of HFR and HDF on serum micronutrient concentrations in MHD patients.
