The potential of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz.) for simultaneous Hg and Au phytoextraction was explored by investigating Hg and Au localization in cassava roots through Micro-Proton Induced X-Ray Emission, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) and X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD). The effect of Hg and Au in the cyanogenic glucoside linamarin distribution was also investigated using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-FT-ICR-MS) imaging. Hg was located mainly in the root vascular bundle of plants grown in 50 or 100 μmol L Hg solutions. Au was localized in the epidermis and cortex or in the epidermis and endodermis for 50 and 100 μmol L Au solutions, respectively. For 50 μmol L solutions of both Hg and Au, the two metals were co-localized in the epidermis. When the Hg concentrations were increased to 100 μmol L, Au was still localized to a considerable extent in the epidermis while Hg was located in all root parts. HR-TEM and XRD revealed that Au nanoparticles were formed in cassava roots. MALDI-FT-ICR-MS imaging showed linamarin distribution in the roots of control and plants and metal-exposed plants thus suggesting that linamarin might be involved in Hg and Au uptake and distribution.

This study aimed to explore the mechanisms and molecular targets of total flavones of Abelmoschus manihot(TFA) plus empagliflozin(EM) in attenuating diabetic tubulopathy(DT) by targeting mitochondrial homeostasis and pyroptosis-apoptosis-necroptosis(PANoptosis). In the in vivo study, the authors established the DT rat models through a combination of uninephrectomy, administration of streptozotocin via intraperitoneal injections, and exposure to a high-fat diet. Following modeling successfully, the DT rat models received either TFA, EM, TFA+EM, or saline(as a vehicle) by gavage for eight weeks, respectively.

The development of sustainable and functional emulsifying systems has become increasingly important in both agri-food and industrial applications, driven by regulatory restrictions on synthetic emulsifiers and the growing demand for natural alternatives such as cassava starches and coconut oil. This study explored the structural, morphological, and techno-functional properties of complexes formed between native and heat-moisture-treated (HMT) starches and short-chain fatty acids prepared under ultrasonic cavitation, and assessed their effectiveness as stabilizing agents in Pickering emulsions. HMT significantly enhanced the complexing index to 71.

Plant breeders aim to increase provitamin A carotenoids in cassava (Manihot esculenta) storage roots to help combat vitamin A deficiency in sub-Saharan Africa, but a negative genetic correlation between total carotenoid (TC) and dry matter (DM) contents hinders progress. While genetic linkage between a major-effect variant in the phytoene synthase 2 (PSY2) gene and nearby candidate gene(s) has been thought to drive this correlation, molecular evidence suggests there may be a metabolic relationship between TC and DM, implying genome-wide pleiotropic effects. Bivariate genome-wide associations were used to examine the genetic architecture of the negative covariance between traits and test for pleiotropy.
