Article Abstract

Three new antimalarial compounds, clonocoprogens A, B, and C, were isolated from the static culture of an Okinawan fungus, Clonostachys compactiuscula FKR-0021. These compounds were new analogs of N-palmitoylcoprogen, reported as a siderophore. They showed moderate antimalarial activity against chloroquine-sensitive and chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains, with IC values ranging from 1.7 to 9.9 µM.

Article Synopsis
  • Trihydroxy fatty acids, derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids in various organisms, exhibit diverse biological effects.
  • This study isolated a new trihydroxy fatty acid named okeanic acid-A from a cyanobacterium in Okinawa, alongside other acids like malyngic and 15,16-dihydromalyngic acids.
  • The structure and configuration of okeanic acid-A were determined using advanced techniques, and it demonstrated mild growth-inhibitory effects on a marine diatom.

Dietary interventions modify gut microbiota and clinical outcomes. Weight reduction and improved glucose and lipid homeostasis were observed after adopting an Okinawan-based Nordic diet (O-BN) in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The aim of the present study was to explore changes in metabolomics and gut microbiota during O-BN and correlate changes with clinical outcomes.

Two new antiplasmodial peptides, named koshidacins A () and B (), were discovered from the culture broth of the Okinawan fungus FKR-0564. Their structures, including absolute configurations, were elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic methods and chemical derivatization. Both compounds showed moderate antiplasmodial activity against strains, with IC values ranging from 17.

Accumulating evidence to date suggests that brown rice is superior to white rice in regard to its beneficial impact on a number of risk factors of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, little is known about the influence of fermented brown rice beverage on the gut microbiota in humans. We therefore hypothesized that its impact would beneficially alter the gut microbiota composition of patients with MetS.

Article Synopsis
  • Red yeast rice has a long history of use in Asia for making alcoholic beverages and foods, and includes Okinawan-style fermented tofu in Japan since the 18th century.
  • Recent research has identified monacolin K (lovastatin) in some fungi, highlighting red yeast rice’s potential as a natural cholesterol-lowering agent and a preventive measure for lifestyle diseases.
  • The paper discusses red yeast rice's historical significance, production methods, pharmacologically active ingredients, and evidence supporting its benefits for lipid metabolism and circulatory health, while also addressing its safety as a functional food.*
