Article Abstract

The heteroatom-directed lateral lithiation of functionalized toluenes in a choline chloride-based eutectic mixture is reported. The metalations proceed within ultrafast reaction times, with a broad substrate and electrophile scope. The directing groups provide a rapid and high regioselective access to functionalized aromatic derivatives of remarkable synthetic value.

Advanced characterization is paramount to understanding battery cycling and degradation in greater detail. Herein, we present a novel methodology of battery electrode analysis, employing focused ion beam (FIB) secondary-ion mass spectrometry platforms coupled with a specific lift-out specimen preparation, allowing us to optimize analysis and prevent air contamination. Correlative microscopy, combining electron microscopy and chemical imaging of a liquid electrolyte Li-ion battery electrode, is performed over the entire electrode thickness down to subparticle domains.

While nanostructural engineering holds promise for improving the stability of high-capacity silicon (Si) anodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), challenges like complex synthesis and the high cost of nano-Si impede its commercial application. In this study, we present a local reduction technique to synthesize micron-scale monolithic layered Si (10-20 μm) with a high tap density of 0.9-1.

Controlled Growth Lateral/Vertical Heterostructure Interface for Lithium Storage.

Adv Mater

July 2024

Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory for Science of Material Creation and Energy Conversion, Institute of Frontier Chemistry, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shandong University, Qingdao, 266237, P. R. China.

Artificial heterostructures with structural advancements and customizable electronic interfaces are fundamental for achieving high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, a design idea for a covalently bonded lateral/vertical black phosphorus (BP)-graphdiyne oxide (GDYO) heterostructure achieved through a facile ball-milling approach, is designed. Lateral heterogeneity is realized by the sp-hybridized mode P-C bonds, which connect the phosphorus atoms at the edges of BP with the carbon atoms of the terminal acetylene in GDYO.

Metal telluride nanosheets by scalable solid lithiation and exfoliation.

Nature

April 2024

Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang, China.

Transition metal tellurides (TMTs) have been ideal materials for exploring exotic properties in condensed-matter physics, chemistry and materials science. Although TMT nanosheets have been produced by top-down exfoliation, their scale is below the gram level and requires a long processing time, restricting their effective application from laboratory to market. We report the fast and scalable synthesis of a wide variety of MTe (M = Nb, Mo, W, Ta, Ti) nanosheets by the solid lithiation of bulk MTe within 10 min and their subsequent hydrolysis within seconds.

Controlled Li Alloying by Postsynthesis Electrochemical Treatment of CuZnSn(S, Se) Absorbers for Solar Cells.

Laboratory for Thin Films and Photovoltaics, Empa-Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, Überlandstrasse 129, 8600 Dübendorf, Switzerland.

Li-alloying of CuZnSn(S, Se) (CZTSSe) absorbers is widely accepted for its beneficial influence on the performance of CZTSSe-based thin film solar cells. Given the degraded morphology characteristic of absorbers synthesized in the presence of excess Li concentrations, it is speculated that Li may be best incorporated into the absorber after synthesis. Here, we report an innovative method to add Li to synthesized CZTSSe by an electrochemical treatment using a liquid electrolyte.
