Article Abstract

To explore the sources and distribution characteristics of SO in the surface waters of the Linhuan mining area in Huaibei, river and surface water samples in subsidence and mine drainage locations in the study area were collected at different times. The conventional hydrochemical indexes and the eigenvalues of sulfur and oxygen isotopes were tested and analyzed. The results suggested the following: (1) The SO content showed seasonal changes: low-flow seasons > mid-flow seasons > high-flow seasons. (2) Based on δS and δO isotope analyses, the main source of SO was the dissolution of evaporite salt rocks in the stratum of the upstream area. The SO in the subsidence area was mainly from the river water supply, mine drainage and coal gangue leaching. The high concentration of SO in the mine drainage was mainly from the dissolution of evaporative salt rocks. (3) The calculation results of the ternary mixing model showed that the SO in the subsidence area water was affected by mine drainage and gangue leaching to different degrees. The results showed that the sulfate contribution proportion of the river water source to the subsidence area water was 35.8-65.9%; the sulfate contribution proportion of the mine drainage source to the subsidence area water was 2.0-26.6%; and the sulfate contribution proportion of the gangue leaching end source ranged from 16.3% to 56.9%. Coal mining activities had an important impact on the sulfate in the subsidence area water.

Drought and liming impacts of mine-impacted wetland sediments.

CanmetMINING, Natural Resources Canada, Ottawa, ON, Canada. Electronic address:

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem at legacy and active mine sites around the world. Climate associated drought and rewetting events can increase the severity of AMD impacts through oxidation and release of stored metal(loid)s and acidity from contaminated sediments. The area surrounding Sudbury, Ontario, with its massive mining and smelting complexes, appears especially vulnerable to drought-driven effects.

Heavy metal pollution risks in Makhat's Watershed Sediments (Taza Province, Morocco): ecological and health risks.

The exploitation of lead in Bouaazza's mine (NE Morocco) caused sulfuric discharges to be exposed in big superficies, which generated pollution of sediments in the area by acid mine drainage. The results of physicochemical properties (pH and electrical conductivity) and heavy metals concentrations indicated an acidic pH (< 6) for sediments, especially for samples stations near Bouaazza's mine. As for heavy metals, the X-ray fluorescence concentrations for Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni and Cr were high, with concentrations exceeding international standards.

Sustainable Use, Management and Reclamation of Soil and Water Research Group, Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, Paseo Alfonso XIII 48, 30203 Cartagena, Spain. Electronic address:

Mining areas are highly susceptible to environmental contamination due to the accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), necessitating regular monitoring to assess environmental risks. In this study, soil samples were collected from two depths (0-15 cm and 15-30 cm) at 74 stations, along with deep waste samples (0-12 m) from three adjacent tailings ponds in the Mazarrón mining area, Spain. Soil/waste physicochemical properties and the Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb concentrations of total, water-soluble, and bioavailable fractions were analyzed.

Artisanal gold mining in Nigeria's Ile-Ife-Ilesha schist belt has triggered an unprecedented heavy metal contamination crisis, posing severe environmental and public health risks. Despite increasing reports of pollution, comprehensive geospatial and multivariate assessments of contamination patterns and sources remain limited, creating a significant knowledge gap in understanding heavy metal dynamics in the region. This study assessed the extent, sources, and health implications of heavy metal pollution in the Ile-Ife-Ilesha mining corridor using integrated geospatial and multivariate statistical analyses.

Understanding oxidized uranium [U(VI)] reactions with natural organic matter (NOM) is necessary to predict the solubility and mobility of U and NOM in waters from organically rich geologic uranium deposits influenced by natural and anthropogenic processes. Here, we investigated the changes in the chemical composition of NOM resulting from its reaction with U(VI) under acidic and neutral pH under controlled laboratory conditions. We employed a multianalytical approach, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS).
