Article Abstract

Fast and accurate detection of viral RNA pathogens is important in apiculture. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based detection method has been developed, which is simple, specific, and sensitive. In this study, we rapidly (in 1 min) synthesized cDNA from the RNA of deformed wing virus (DWV)-infected bees (), and then, within 10 min, amplified the target cDNA by ultra-rapid qPCR. The PCR products were hybridized to a DNA-chip for confirmation of target gene specificity. The results of this study suggest that our method might be a useful tool for detecting DWV, as well as for the diagnosis of RNA virus-mediated diseases on-site.

American foulbrood (AFB) and European foulbrood (EFB), caused by and , respectively, are severe bacterial diseases that significantly affect honey bee health and productivity worldwide. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential for effective disease management in apiaries. We developed and validated a multiplex point-of-care (POC) quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay that enables simultaneous and rapid detection of and directly in apiaries.

Ocular Surface Alteration on Corneal Endothelial Decompensation and Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty.

Clin Ophthalmol

August 2025

State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases, Guangzhou, 510060, People's Republic of China.

Objective: To explore alterations in tears and ocular surface throughout Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK), thereby offering valuable insights for clinical intervention.

Methods: This study was conducted on 84 patients (84 eyes) with CED and received DMEK who visited the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University from April 2022 to January 2024. All patients were evaluated preoperatively and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively, with 31 patients (31 eyes) post-24 months above.

Honey bee health is increasingly threatened worldwide by a complex and evolving viral landscape; however, this aspect in Central Asia remains understudied despite the region being strategically positioned along historic and modern trade routes. In 2024, we conducted a nationwide virome survey of Apis mellifera across 32 cities in 11 regions of Uzbekistan, combining the metagenomic data of 14 pooled RNA-seq libraries with RT-PCR validation and phylogenetic analyses. High-quality sequencing yielded an average of approximately 60 million reads per pool.

In this paper, a strain-temperature sensor with medium-high stretchability is proposed for aeronautic applications. The elastomer is conceived to be used as a protective cover on a morphing airfoil characterized by high curvatures. The main novelties in design and manufacturing compared to the state of the art are: use of a non-commercial, low-viscosity PDMS crosslinked with TEOS and DBTDL to enable effective graphene dispersion; innovative sensor design featuring an insulating interlayer on the substrate; and presence of micro-voids to enhance adhesion to the substrate.

Wings as Part of the Sensory System in the Aphid Subfamily Eriosomatinae s. lat. (Insecta, Hemiptera).

Wings are a crucial evolutionary trait of insects and constitute an important part of their sensory system. Phloem-feeding aphids specialising in particular host plant species require an efficient sensory system and locomotive abilities to find an appropriate plant to complete the life cycle. Wings (in winged morphs) play a crucial role in this dispersal, but the sensory part of their structure is neglected.
