Our goal was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of galantamine in a mouse model of blast-induced indirect traumatic optic neuropathy (bITON). Galantamine is an FDA-approved acetylcholinesterase inhibitor used to treat mild-moderate Alzheimer's disease. We exposed one eye of an anesthetized mouse to repeat bursts of over-pressurized air to induce traumatic optic neuropathy. Mice were given regular or galantamine-containing water (120 mg/L) ad libitum, beginning immediately after blast and continuing for one month. Electroretinograms and visual evoked potentials were performed just prior to endpoint collection. Histological and biochemical assessments were performed to assess activation of sterile inflammation, axon degeneration, and synaptic changes. Galantamine treatment mitigated visual function deficits induced by our bITON model via preservation of the b-wave of the electroretinogram and the N1 of the visual evoked potential. We also observed a reduction in axon degeneration in the optic nerve as well as decreased rod bipolar cell dendritic retraction. Galantamine also showed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Galantamine may be a promising treatment for blast-induced indirect traumatic optic neuropathy as well as other optic neuropathies.

Understanding musculoskeletal joints from a 3D multiscale perspective, from molecular to anatomical levels, is essential for resolving the confounding relationships between structure and pain, elucidating the intricate mechanisms regulating joint health and diseases, and developing new treatment strategies. Here, we introduce a musculoskeletal joint immunostaining and clearing (MUSIC) method specifically designed to overcome key challenges of immunostaining and optical clearing of intact joints. Coupled with large-field light sheet microscopy, our approach enables 3D high-resolution, microscale neurovascular mapping within the context of whole-joint anatomy without the need for image coregistration across various joints, including temporomandibular joints, knees, and spines, and multiple species, including mouse, rat, and pig.

Traumatic vitreous hemorrhage is most commonly associated with sports injuries or accidental falls. We report an exceptionally rare case of vitreous hemorrhage presumed to result from blunt trauma inflicted by the forepaw of a domestic cat. A 50-year-old man presented with blurred vision and ocular pain in his right eye after being struck by his pet cat.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be characterized as a disorder of fear learning and memory, in which there is a failure to retain memory for the extinction of conditioned fear. Sleep has been implicated in successful extinction retention. The coupling of sleep spindles to slow oscillations (SOs) during non-rapid eye movement sleep has been shown to broadly underpin sleep's beneficial effect on memory consolidation.

Background: Eye injuries are a serious problem and may result in reduced visual acuity. The most common eye injuries include corneal damage, often involving the presence of a foreign body. OCT examination of the anterior segment - AS OCT - may be a valuable test in the diagnostics and follow-up of patients in whom the presence of a foreign body after eye trauma is suspected.

Retinal detachment is popularly treated with intraocular silicone oil tamponade. A rarely observed complication of this procedure is intracranial migration of silicone oil through the optic canal. Though this is typically a benign finding, it can be mistaken on imaging for intracerebral hemorrhage or neoplasm.
