type 1 (DM1) results from nuclear sequestration of splicing factors by a messenger RNA (mRNA) harboring a large (CUG) repeat array transcribed from the causal (CTG) DNA amplification. Several compounds were previously shown to bind the (CUG) RNA and release the splicing factors. We now investigated for the first time the interaction of an aliphatic polycarbonate carrying guanidinium functions to DM1 DNA/RNA model probes by affinity capillary electrophoresis. The apparent association constants ( ) were in the range described for reference compounds such as pentamidine. Further macromolecular engineering could improve association specificity. The polymer presented no toxicity in cell culture at concentrations of 1.6-100.0 μg/mL as evaluated both by MTT and real-time monitoring xCELLigence method. These promising results may lay the foundation for a new branch of potential therapeutic agents for DM1.

Type 3 secretion system (T3SS) is an essential virulence system utilized by many gram-negative bacteria including to deliver effector proteins into host cells. The extracellular, long, needle-like proteinaceous complex (pilus) of T3SS transports effectors. In , HrpA, an 11 kDa protein assembles to form the pilus structure, whose structure and stability remain poorly understood.

Rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries remain an important technological target as an alternative to lithium. Here, acidic room-temperature ionic liquid analogue electrolytes (ILAs) were synthesized from guanidine hydrochloride salt (GuanHCl) and aluminum chloride, with varying metal-to-salt (AlCl/GuanHCl) ratios, and were characterized for their potential application in aluminum-ion batteries. The rheological properties of these electrolytes, including viscosity and electrical conductivity, were determined.

Development of efficient actuators and understanding of their mechanisms are crucial for progress in areas such as soft robotics and artificial muscles. Here, we report a self-standing film of an ionic covalent organic framework (V-TG) composed of cationic guanidinium and viologen linkers, which shows an instantaneous and reversible photoactuation. Upon UV light exposure, the film deflects by 100 ° in less than 3 s, through a triple energy conversion cascade, where light is first converted into chemical energy via intramolecular charge transfer, then to thermal energy, and finally into mechanical energy, causing the film to bend.

Thermophilic microbial lipases that retain activity under harsh conditions are a highly desirable tool for catalysis in numerous biosynthetic and biotechnological applications. In this study, a putative SGNH lipase gene, from (SGNH1), was overexpressed using a pMCSG7 plasmid in BL21(DE3) cells. The polyhistidine-tagged enzyme was expressed as inclusion bodies that were readily solubilized using Empigen BB detergent, and the protein was purified to homogeneity using immobilized metal affinity chromatography.

A green, rapid and simple method has been proposed for the separation and sorption-spectrometric and test-determination of synthetic (Quinoline Yellow, Sunset Yellow, Tartrazine) and natural (β-Carotene, Curcumin, Carmine) dyes. Mini-column filled with polyamine-modified silica were used for the first time for this purpose. Polyhexamethylene guanidine and poly(diallyldimethylammonium) - polyamine with a quaternary ammonium base - were used as polyamines.
