Article Abstract

The REproductive Meristem (REM) gene family encodes for transcription factors belonging to the B3 DNA binding domain superfamily. In , the gene family is composed of 45 members, preferentially expressed during flower, ovule, and seed developments. Only a few members of this family have been functionally characterized: () and, most recently, () regulate flowering time and (), together with () that control the death of the receptive synergid cell in the female gametophyte. We investigated the role of , , and , three closely related and linked genes similarly expressed in both female and male gametophytes. Simultaneous silencing by RNA interference (RNAi) caused about 50% of the ovules to remain unfertilized. Careful evaluation of both ovule and pollen developments showed that this partial sterility of the transgenic RNAi lines was due to a postmeiotic block in both female and male gametophytes. Furthermore, protein interaction assays revealed that REM34 and REM35 interact, which suggests that they work together during the first stages of gametogenesis.

Background: In genetic studies with the Hybrid Mouse Diversity Panel, we previously identified a chromosome 9 locus for atherosclerosis. We now identify NNMT (nicotinamide -methyltransferase), an enzyme that degrades nicotinamide, as the causal gene in the locus and show that the underlying mechanism involves salvage of nicotinamide to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD).

Methods: Gain/loss of function studies in macrophages were performed to examine the role of NAD levels in macrophage proliferation and apoptosis in atherosclerosis.

Reliably defining the risk of adverse in-flight events in aeromedical trauma patients could enable more informed pre-departure treatment and guide central asset allocation to achieve better system-level outcomes. Unfortunately, the current literature base specifically examining the in-flight period is sparse. Flight duration is often considered a proxy for the risk of in-flight deterioration; however, there is limited data to support this commonly held assumption.

Objective: This study applied the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to explore the barriers and enablers to optimizing post-operative pain management and supporting safe opioid use from the perspectives of both patients and health care professionals, applying the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF).

Design: Experience-based co-design (EBCD) qualitative study.

Methods: In the initial phase of the EBCD approach, focus groups were conducted comprising 20 participants, including 8 patients and 12 health care professionals involved in post-operative care.
