Omentin-1 is a novel adipokine with anti-inflammatory functions. Apelin is associated with hyperinsulinemia and pathological angiogenesis. Chemerin has both pro- and anti-inflammatory actions and implicated in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to assess serum omentin-1, apelin and chemerin concentrations and to investigate their association with the presence and severity of DR in T2DM patients. Serum omentin-1, apelin and chemerin were measured in 112 patients with DR and 56 patients without DR. Bivariate analysis showed omentin-1 correlated negatively with hsCRP and TyG index; while apelin correlated positively with chemerin. Linear regression data showed that apelin and chemerin were independent predictors of DR severity. ROC curve revealed that omentin-1 was the best discriminant for DR while apelin was the best discriminant for vision threatening retinopathy. Serum omentin-1 concentration correlates negatively, while serum apelin and chemerin concentrations correlate positively with DR presence and severity in T2DM patients.

Objectives: This meta-analysis aimed to assess circulating adipokine levels in girls with central precocious puberty (CPP) and compare them with those in healthy controls.
Methods: An exhaustive literature search was conducted, using the Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases, from the inception of the study to October 31, 2023, to identify relevant studies. Studies comparing the serum levels of adiponectin, leptin, irisin, apelin, omentin, chemerin, resistin, vaspin, and visfatin in girls with CPP and healthy girls of the same age were included.

Perirenal adipose tissue (PRAT) exhibits particular morphological features, with its activity being mainly related to thermogenesis. However, an expanded PRAT area seems to play a significant role in cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease pathogenesis. Numerous studies have demonstrated that PRAT may support cancer progression and invasion, mainly in obese patients.

Research Question: Do the levels of adipokines (adiponectin, apelin, chemerin and vaspin) in plasma, hypothalamus, ovaries and periovarian adipose tissue differ during polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)?
Design: The PCOS was induced in rats by oral administration of non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor letrozole. To determine the plasma levels of adiponectin, apelin, chemerin and vaspin enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were carried out. To assess the expression (gene and protein) and immunolocalization of these adipokines and their receptors, namely Adipor1 and Adipor2 for adiponectin, Aplnr for apelin, Ccrl2, Cmklr1 and Gpr1 for chemerin and Grp78 for vaspin in the hypothalamus, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to analyse ovaries and periovarian adipose tissue respectively.

Currently, obesity is a global pandemic characterized by systemic metabolic complications that negatively impact several organs, including white adipose tissue (WAT) and the tissues of the male reproductive system. Since the discovery of leptin in 1994, WAT has been recognized as a dynamic endocrine organ for secreting a series of molecules with hormonal functions, collectively called adipokines. The link between obesity, WAT, adipokines, and the male reproductive system is direct and little explored.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the most fatal gynecological neoplasms. Meta-analyses have shown that the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and ovarian cancer incidence was detected in some types of ovarian cancer. Chronic inflammation and excessive accumulation of free fatty acids are key adipose tissue-derived factors initiating cancer development.
